BSN Student Interested in Abortion Care as a R.N.

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I'm currently a BSN Student who is extremely interested in all things birth control, reproductive health, and abortion care. In researching new grad residency programs, not too many mention, let alone really focus on, abortion care services. This sadly makes sense since many of these programs are hospital-based and early abortion services are typically provided outside of this setting. I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations / advice for an aspiring nurse (with a previous bachelor's degree in public health & master's degree focusing on health policy) who is passionate about abortion care. I think I've become disenchanted by the constant "be lucky / grateful for any job you can get as a new nurse" advice as well as the "get your 1-2 years R.N. experience in a hospital then you can do whatever you want" advice. I have had a really GREAT career being able to dabble in different areas of healthcare that excite and interest me. I know finding a nursing job can be difficult, but I also know that opportunities exist in this underresearched area of nursing practice. Any helpful & positive input would be greatly appreciated (:

Specializes in L&D.

You don't have to apply for a new grad residency program.

How about just applying to your local Planned Parenthood?

Maybe try volunteering now to get your foot in the door.

In college I volunteered as a "client liaison".

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Definitely this. I would try to volunteer NOW. It can help a lot when it comes time for job searching later. Nothing says that you can't go right into your desired area of nursing if they'll hire you!

Specializes in Reproductive & Public Health.

Yes! Try to get your foot in the door at planned parenthood. You can search their website for intern/volunteer positions. Unfortunately, most nursing (and medical, APRN, PA etc) schools do not offer clinical rotations at abortion facilities.
