Starting Excelsior's MSN - Education

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I decided a year out of school was enough -- I completed my RN to BSN in June 2010 -- so I'm back in school for an MSN! I decided to go back to Excelsior, where I did my ADN. The price is fabulous for active duty peeps like me -- $250/credit hour! :)

I start NUR502 on September 5. Anyone other Excelsior MSN students out there?

I'm seriously considering this program. Help, LUNAH!!!! Lol. Anyone has any info on this program? EC MSN Education track. How many hours of time should be dedicated to class a week? Will the faculty be willing to assist you in a timely matter? Is it REALLY possible to take two classes at a time and work full time? I have a BA and AAS. Would I have to take prerequisites BEFORE starting the nursing? TIA

I actually switched over to the Informatics track just as I was finishing the core MSN courses, but I think the program is doable. I took two classes at a time just once, it was a little bit much for me with all my Army stuff, but not too bad. You should have EC evaluate your credits and see how much you'd need to complete your MSN. There will likely be BSN-level nursing classwork for you to complete. Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. They CLAIM I won't need to do any BSN courses since I have a BA and my RN license. I'm still surprised at that.

Wow! Get that in writing. ;)

erika what exactly are the costs for that program? they said over the phone ~ $400 per credit hour and each course is 3 hours so is that ~ $1200 per course. i know they are one of the least expensive but $1200 seems like a lot to me for one course...and there are several courses to take for their program.

again, i was very interested in their program because it is ~ completely online, except for a few days on site clinical i think, but, the degree is not accepted in nys...and even though i dont work in nys state now, i may in the future, and dont want to limit myself. otherwise, it seems like a good program to me.

Hey dayshiftnurse and lunahRN,

I am contemplating the ADN to MSN track Ed but you seem to have said that the degree resulting from Excelsior is not accepted in NYS?

EC is located in NY and is accepted there.

How long does Phase 1 take to complete and how many hours of work weekly? TIA

Hi Lunah, I just passed my CPNE yesterday and am already thinking about the future (even though I haven't even taken the nclex yet). Do you know much about the msn specializing in nursing education from Excelsior? Specifically do you know anyone who's gone that route and how successful they were at obtaining a career in educating? Also..what kinds of areas do you work in with an informatics specialization? ( I would PM..but the system says I haven't posted enough to be able to).

Hi, Lunah - I am actually interested in the same questions, maybe you can answer for both of us - thanks!

Sorry ... my answer is that I don't know.

Well I got my acceptance letter to this program MONTHS ago and I'm still back and forth. I feel I need some motivation. I've never done courses online and I'm just scared I will get lazy. I spoke to a friend of mine who told me most MSN courses are online anyway. Then the courses are 15 weeks which is a big concern for me. I'm literally in a bind because EC is the only school that will take me without having to do the BSN. I need to get a higher degree because NY is getting VERY tight right now. I REALLY want to do this program. Anyone else having success with this program??? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am interested in attending Excelsior College Masters in Nursing Education. I will be working a full-time travel job is it challenging? Do they require you to take Advanced pharmacology, health assessment, patho?
