Starting Excelsior's MSN - Education

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I decided a year out of school was enough -- I completed my RN to BSN in June 2010 -- so I'm back in school for an MSN! I decided to go back to Excelsior, where I did my ADN. The price is fabulous for active duty peeps like me -- $250/credit hour! :)

I start NUR502 on September 5. Anyone other Excelsior MSN students out there?

Hi guys, how much did it change from 2010, is it still doable? I called and been told, that taking few classes is like a full time job. I just wonder how many classes at the time are doable with full time or part time job and some life and time for hobbies...?

How difficult is it?

Any input from someone currently attending (RN to MSN, MSN) would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

DNTcode- I am in the RN to MSN with a focus in Informatics. I have completed the BSN portion, so I have 6 classes left to finish for the MSN portion. I have taken 3 to 4 courses per semester while working full time. I have had a decent school/life balance, but it hasn't been easy to balance it all the time. I would say taking 2 classes a semester would be much easier.

I actually switched over to the Informatics track just as I was finishing the core MSN courses, but I think the program is doable. I took two classes at a time just once, it was a little bit much for me with all my Army stuff, but not too bad. You should have EC evaluate your credits and see how much you'd need to complete your MSN. There will likely be BSN-level nursing classwork for you to complete. Good luck!!

I am still on the CPNE wait list and absolutely TIRED of school! But! I am still thinking about applying for the RN to MSN in Nursing Informatics, after I pass the state boards. I just have one question: Are MSN RNs still allowed to function primarily as a bedside nurse?? I know I am not cut out to be a nurse educator. I mean if I have to do that once in a while, that's fine. But, I do the best work as a bedside nurse...IJS.

If you aren't going to leave the bedside, a BSN is enough. Heck, an ADN is fine in some areas. You can stay at the bedside with an MSN, but some places may overlook you as overqualified.

Thank you Pixie.RN! You have helped me solidify my decision. I'm not going to waste time on the RN to MSN program. More than likely I will end my educational "career" with a BSN degree. Yay!

You can always go back if you change your mind! :)
