Per the website terms of service, we cannot post staff or faculty names in the forums. I have edited the last post, and I encourage EC students to contact the school for more information. Thanks.

I am considering Excelsior but am nervous regarding the number of clinical hours. I have been an lpn for 7 years. I want to be the best RN possible but The amt of hours that they are requiring is ridiculous. It really defeats the purpose of going the nontraditional route.

I agree. But not all states require these hours. And if you can prove 1500 clinical hours worth of experience in the immediate 3 years prior to enrollment in EC, you will not have to do those hours. (This was in effect in the state of Georgia when I graduated in 2010. Fortunately, I didn't have to do the preceptorship hours.) Every state has its requirements. Some have less hours required and some have more.

Although I did fight with the Georgia BON and won, I was prepared to do the 350 hours because I figured I had waited that long (24 years) to get my RN, what's another 350 hours? What triggered my fight was the fact that they wanted me to do 700 hours as if I had never been a nurse even when I submitted proof of 10000 clinical hours!!! Their response was that they were looking at the immediate 3 years. Since I had provided hours of my primary jobs dating back to 2002 to total up the 10000 hours, I had to narrow down and pull out the many agency assignments, (all hospital work), to accommodate their pickiness.

Just review the BON website for every little picky detail to get the requirement information before hand. Be ready to ask the BON staff for details for info that they post in codes, like "Regarding rule #£171.4, the Board found that..... If you see something like that, ask them what the heck (not what i wanted to say) does that mean. They tend to hide behind that legal jargon. And I guarantee you, if you ask them that, they will have to 'get back with your' because the person that you are talking to doesn't have a clue. Respectfully take the aggressive standpoint. After all, those hours would be coming out of your hide, not theirs. Good luck to you!

Go for it. it looks great on a resume.

Hi Stephanie! Yes, in Georgia - because Excelsior is considered a Non-Traditional program - if you have not had a couple of years working as an LPN in Med-Surg or post-acute care in SNF, then you will have to do some hours. They just want you to do basically what Excelsior does NOT take us through in the "traditional" programs - the clinicals. They will assess your hours (if any) worked in Med-Surg, etc. and if you have none, you will have to complete approximately 400 hours I think - and have specific time in all settings, such as mental health. This can be worked out usually fairly easily though. I am CPNE eligible now and hope to complete the CPNE in maybe October or so....and once I do (since I live in Georgia), I will apply to sit for the NCLEX-RN with the state but I will have to fill out the application that is for students that have attended a "non-traditional" program. Georgia accepts Excelsior without any problem because it is accredited - they just want to see time put in for "clinical" hours prior to allowing you to sit for the exam. Hope this helped! You can contact me if you have more questions....

ADDENDUM to my reply above: I do not know the specifics about courses vs testing with Excelsior though for anatomy and physiology and some of the basic required courses. I have heard (maybe not for Georgia though...not sure) that some states WILL NOT ACCEPT any coursework from Excelsior for the "general education or core courses" that was merely "tested out" rather than taking a course. For example, I transferred into Excelsior ALL of my courses for psychology, sociology, humanities, microbiology, statistics - all of them. The only courses I took or tested out of with Excelsior were the actual nursing courses in the NURSING COMPONENT portion (phases I and II). I took tests for all of those and they will be accepted. However, it is not clear to me if the general education component courses are accepted with Georgia if you "tested" for them rather than taking a 3-semester course. Maybe someone else will know.
