I am an RN (4yrs) with a BSN, PHN and MPH. I have a strong passion for maternal child and public health. My husb and I are trying to think of a business where we can offer services to the community in which we live, probably specifically tailored to young moms and children, but overall to women, children and families. Im thinking along the lines of a resource center that offers education, support, CPR classes, case management and possibly transportation/accomoaniment to dr appts. I also want to integrate a home visiting program for new mothers after giving birth. My husb would be over the financial matters since that is his expertise.

Where should I start?

I would start with marketing! A business plan for your biz, whick sounds great! Possibility at grants, donations, angel investors,

and MARKETING, get your message in front of the right people! maybe a newsletter, fb ppc, or BLOG with SEO.

Does your town host a small business development center. Ours does and they helped me tweek my website and face book page.

You have lots of good ideas, figuring out how to make a living is hard. The new born mom visits sound like public health nursing. don't know if you have to become a home care company to do these visits or not. good luck with your ideas and dreams!...each step forward will take you to your goals.

Thanks you all! As a matter of fact, I just recently met a new business owner in my town and plan to have him assist me with my ideas and marketing. I hope to get it going very soon!

I would creat a FB fan page and run a small add targeting your audience and other nurses in your field to like

your page, and start creating content and engaging your audience with your great ideas and mission!

First put down on paper your mission statement. Outline the steps of what you would like the business to accomplish and how you would like to achieve these goals. You don't need to have all the answers just be clear on what you want to offer. Next research. You need to make sure there is a need for this type of business. I am an OB nurse and plan to offer childbirth education classes soon, eventually I plan to add other services such as lactation and nutrition and eventually will add classes unrelated to nursing care for teen girls and self-esteem. We are hoping for a community type center to offer classes and host seminars as we grow.

I thought about home visits but this isn't as in demand as you may think. And those places that offer that service may only offer one or two visits. Of course I am assuming you are speaking of well child visits, not peds cases that need continuous skilled nursing care.

Another idea may be antepartum home visits some people are on bed rest for weeks and need services. Don't know if this would work for you. Good luck, we are on similar path.

Sounds like a great idea. I currently work for an agency doing pediatric home health. I love working with infants. The only issue I see with your business idea is where you will be getting paid, it will likely have to be private pay because I wouldn't think insurance companies will want to pay for those types of services. Unless you can get backed by a hospital to offer breast feeding assistance or something like that, but I still don't know if insurance would pay...They barely want to reimburse for necessary things..I think offering CPR is a great idea as well. I just became certified as an instructor to start training other health care professionals and I see the need in the homes I visit as well. The kids I care for are mostly trached and vent dependent and it is so important for everyone in the home to be comfortable in CPR just in case anything should happen.
