Nurses Entrepreneurs

Published

starts to bind! Sunday evening as I was computing my schedule for March, my husband called out from the kitchen, "Dinner's ready!". (He's a much better cook than I ever want to be!) I got up from my chair and promptly fell down! On my way to the floor I heard a 'POP' and then 'CRACK' coming from the vacinity of my left foot. Hubby rushes into my office and sez: "Hey, you're on the floor!" I sez: "Hey, I broke my foot!" We decided to eat before traveling the 30 miles to the ED.

At the ED, (where many nurses know me), I am wheeled into an exam room and receiving alot of good hearted jabs at the idea of the foot care nurse breaking her foot!

The Orthopod who happens to be in-house is called down. He brings the x-rays to me and sez: "Yessir, Lois Jean, it's busted."

I sez: "Lemme see those pictures, doc." He hands them over and I look at the better one and say: "Ah ha! A non-fragmenting fracture involving the proximal aspect of the left 5th digit at Jones Point and radiating into the distal aspect of the lateral arch. In other words, doc, a Ballerina's Fracture. Requires casting."

He sez: "I suppose you're going to tell me how to cast it!" and I sez: "Why, don't you know how?"

I'm so glad we live in a small community where everyone knows everyone! And I'm glad that it was a quiet night in the ED...we all got off some good laughs (at my expense!)

but....this is one part of my type of Entrepreneural Nursing that always keeps me on my toes, so to speak. Part of my responsibility to myself is making certain I can survive a financial set back if and when I am unable to work for some reason. This time I was fortunate because I can get around on the cast and my work is not compromised. But had it been my femur, tibia or pelvis- well, needless to say I would have been down for awhile.

My business is designed to support me AND ME ALONE. Each month since I began working for myself I put a small amount of $$ in a seperate savings and as my business grew I increased the amount deposited. This is my 'sick pay'. It's to be used only if I am unable to work for a long period of time. I won't need it this time...but, it's there if ever I do.

Anyway, kids, I'm up and at 'em. Feeling okey dokey. Next week I'm heading off to Chicago to visit with grandbabes...(and also to get tattooed with...what else?! a peace sign!)

Peace,

LoisJean

LoisJean, I really admire the way you handle your business and yourself. You are fast becoming my nurse entrepreneur role model. Sorry about the foot! I hope you enjoy the grandbabies.

Hope your back on your feet again (teehee) real soon.

Feel better!!:chuckle

LJ, my hubby has his own disability insurance, so that he gets full reimbursement, the 66 2/3% from WC or disability plus this one supplements it, or wou/d cover I imagione if you are out like this. I can find out the name of it if you are interested. I don't think it's too expensive each month.

Sorry you are down for the count, for a bit. If it makes you feel any better, I slipped on ice and fell on my orifice right in front of a pt wife the other day. Fortunately, only my pride was hurt! :D We're all falling. The supervisor heard us comparing falls and said why are you falling? We're like DUH, maybe YOU salt the parking lot, but many apt complexes don't and try getting parking in the city where people are actually posted guard on their porches to watch dug out parking spots aren't taken!! They will allow the HH nurse to park there...temporarily.

Thanks, Hoolihan- I am definately interested in the disability info-

when you get a sec, maybe you could PM me with it. (Altho, I think it's info we all could use on this forum)-not sure if it's 'legal' to make it public here, tho.

Hey, Bonnie! Exactly WHAT outside sources for Entrepreneurs is legal for publication on this site? Stuff that is not for our personal financial gain, right? No promotions? Am I getting it right?

What if I were to offer my video free of charge to allnurses members who are interested in it? Could that info be made public on this site? Just curious.

Peace,

Lois Jean

Yes, I think as long as there is not personal gain for free advertising. There has been some clarification of this topic lately.

Not to sound vague but we are all in a high learning curve regarding what Brian will allow etc. I am willing to go the stretch and to bat for concerns that will help us ALL learn and grow.

So you are willing to make "available" your video? It would be nice but costly to provide it to everyone. We can, talk about it though. It is not like advertsing when we are discussing it. It is not like you are saying, " Here is my video for XYZ, Do you want to buy it?"

Lois Jean:

Hugs to you while you are convelescing (sp?). I am sorry I did not respond sooner. I had a problem logging on (changing computers does wreck havoc).

I am glad you can still hobble around... I hope you mend quickly and get rid of the cast ever so quickly!

Ok.. since we are admitting to falls.. I fell on my bottom at work last month while tangled up in computer cords. (it was pretty funny).. boy did I feel silly and no I did NOT do an incident report.. geeech!

I have been thinking about you lately. Been very busy myself. Lots going on here. So have had in some respect to put filing my business on back burner for a few weeks. So very sorry to hear about your mishap. Geez what some people won't do for advertising.

Getting your foot casted just so you can use that in some new ads. Hmmm.

Sounds like you are moving along on the video. Very anxious to see it. If you are willing to offer it free as stated, I think that I should at least buy you the blank tape and pay shipping.

Lois Jean:

Without any doubt, you are a kind and generous person. I will gladly send a blank tape and cover expenses.

Currently, I am working my tail off to pay off my debt to prepare myself, still, for a relocation to another community to "hopefully" due a version of what you are doing. I can jsut see me flying out to whereever you are and shadowing you for a week to learn and emulate your practice.

You are a model of compassion, intelligence, and most importantly dilegence in the wonderful world of Entrepreneural Nursing.

And just and FYI... I now subcontract my nursing services to local Agencies who have contracts with facilities. I am reaping tax advantages this way and am an Entrepreneur in the fashion that best suits me for now.

Thank you for your valuable posts!

I will also send a tape and expenses.

I agree w the discussions about advertising. It would have to be a tad diff on this forum b/c that is what it is about, telling people what you do!

The company is called Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co, and are now under an umbrella of Unum http://www.unumprovident.com/

My husband pays ~150 quarterly and would receive $1240/month if he is temporarily disabled and for life is perm disabled. This is in addition to your state temp disability benefit. You do pay into state disability, whatevere it is caled, don't you? Like I am sure you pay into soc sec.

There is a phone # on his last statement 1-800-633-7490 if that helps.
