I'm just curious as to the salary for correctional nurses? I"m a new grad, and have an interview scheduled with a correctional facility in gatesville texas. they do 12 hr shifts from 445am-515pm (whewwwwwwwww that's an early morning and a really long day! lol) i understand some of the duties, but i didnt want to ask about pay so i wondered what range of pay you all make? if you are willing to say...thanks for the input!

It seems like the pay scale for corrections nurses in CT is terrible. I haven't been made an offer yet, don't know if i will or not, but just reviewing the payscales the state has online. according to that, which i really really hope i am reading incorrectly, a RN would only be making about $26 an hour to start. That is $6 less than what I make now, and even though I really want a job in corrections, I don't think I could swing that kind of difference in pay! So hopefully I am just not getting the right info online

I work PRN pool in a county jail infirmary. My pay is 32.00, which is actually less than my staff job in ICU.

I would have to say I agree with the statement that many nursing personnel are not compassionate whatsoever. I swear, sometimes the staff has worse behavior than the inmates.

I enjoy corrections - just the fact I don't have to smile and can take breaks makes me happy. I only work midnight shift, so I am the only RN in my area. I can avoid all the politics and such working midnights.

If it's any comfort to you, i started working as a corrections nurse in a prison as my FIRST job immediately after graduating as an RN with NO previous work experience WHATSOEVER...not even as an LPN (I went str8 thru from LPN to RN). Everyone told me that I should have worked in a hospital first...blah blah blah. Since that time which has been almost two years now, I am very well respected by Officers and experienced nurses who i work with. That being said, i think it depends on the person, work ethic, and ability to get along with others. I'm a very curious person by nature and love to learn...i volunteered to do EVERYTHING in clinicals as a student so that i'd feel comfortable when i got out in the "real world"...and it paid off. My assessment skills were good when i graduated from school and are even better NOW. In my opinion no matter where u begin your career, you'll always have that learning curve....so GO FOR IT!! I did and I don't regret it...I LOVE IT!!! .don't get me wrong, you have your good days and bad days...but isn't that everywhere u work? LOL

PS.... the pay is based on your experience, but is more than a nurse working in a hospital....wooo hooooo!
