If you do start IV's, how often and for what reasons?

I have on several occasions. Usually it is for either hydration or administration of antibiotics. I gave some LR to a guy who got burned once.

we do a lot of detox at the jail, and start iv's frequently for hydration/ativan pushes.

hope this helps.

We do a lot of IV's for dehydration, antibotics, and Ativan pushes for ETOH withdrawls. Basically the same reasons you would give them in any other setting,

Wow, we only start IV's if we have summoned paramedics. We don't treat dehydration in-house. We only push a couple things in emergency situations.

Stephied:

I work in the same system that you applied for (within the state). We start IV's for hydration, etc. This is very rare. We were told if the flu hits hard that we will be hydrating a lot of inmates in the infirmary. Usually if they are sick enough to need IV antibiotics, etc. we will send them out.

We have IV ativan, toradol, etc. available-- but I think it is more for IM injection than anything.

Good luck! I hope your interview with Warren went well.

Thanks all for the info. I think the interview went well but I was one of 8 being intervied that day. I called them yesterday and they said they had not made a decision yet. So I hope I am still in the running.

In Southeast Texas, we start IV's all the time; for Vanc. infusions, lots and lots of rehydration due to the heat during the summer and lack of A/C in the prison. Anytime we are sending someone out for illness or chest pain, etc. Lots of IV's.

Working in surgery for 27 years didn't afford much experience for me starting IV's. Anesthesia or the pre op nurses would start them. I think I could still start an antecubital IV but that would depend on how dehydrated the patient was. I'll do some review.

We do a fair amount of IV hydration, ABT, solumedrol, etc.

setphid,

i'm new to correctional nursing and am surprised that there were so many to interview. I though CN had a greater shortage then hospital nursing
