Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2010

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

I was hoping to continue a great thread that I read last year, Ready to Apply CT Colleges 2009. It was a bunch of people looking to get into the CT Community Colleges nursing program for 2009-2010 academic year! They really banded together and answered questions for each other.

I was hoping to start the same thing for this year.

So, applications for the 2011-2012 year come out in just over a month. November 1st!!!

What has everyone been doing to prepare for the application process. What classes are you currently taking? Has anyone taken the TEAS yet? What was your score? What school is your 1st choice?

Speak up people!

Hi Matt,

Do you know anyone going into/currently in 3rd semester (201) at Gateway? I am trying to get some info to

decide if I should transfer from NCC. Ther's no course schedule on their site for 201 in the Fall so I'm hoping

you or someone else here knows what's going on?

Thanks.

I'm sorry I don't. I can ask on monday if theres a schedule I could see and let you know. I thought the schedules are all the same within the CCC's? M&TH lectures and T&W clinicals? Obviously the classes are all the same in every semester. My friend who graduates from NVCC in a few weeks has had the same schedule since the beginning.

Actually, the classes/clinicals are diff from semester to semester. NCC also have both day and night program...students are allowed not switch back and forth each semester. As a matter of fact the don't want students to do all days or just nights throughout the program. At some point you need both experience which is nice because it gives the opportunity to work with other instructors or lose the ones you're not happy with. How is Gateway program? Does the instructors really care about students? What the retention rate from 1st semester to 2nd and so forth......I have worked with one of the 1st year instructors.

I know the Three Rivers schedule is one day a week of lecture, 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. That day rotates through the four semesters, so in the fall Nurs101 is Mondays. I've heard that the clinical days will also vary, even within a semester, which makes trying to plan a little difficult. I've got to work full time during school, so I'm trying to get the best idea possible of the schedule because while my employer can be flexible, there's a limit to flexibility. I wish evenings and/or weekends were an option. Oh well. It's a good problem to have, considering how many people didn't get in.

I don't know how flexible your employer can be.....but at NCC it's almost impossible to keep a f/t job unless you do all days or all nights clinical and then you still have theory twice in the middle of the day each wk. And sometimes they change schedule with couple days notice which creates a problem for many students. But even if your employee is the exception.........I can tell you you will have a hard time juggle school with f/t work because the course load is so much and not to mention studying.....unless you're a stellar student who can get by easily with putting in the effort! Goood Luck!

To the people who were accepted into the Nursign program for fall 2010. Is there a date you have to respond back by to hold your spot? I am waitlisted and wanted to know if there was still a glimmer of hope of finding out that I can be placed.

orourkco,

At least for Gateway (not sure about the other 4), people have to send in their decision by May 3rd or (May 5th?). However, the admissions woman also said that things often change after that date as well -- all the way up until classes start in both fall & spring semesters -- due to people being accepted elsewhere, finances changing, moving, etc.

Unfortunately/fortunately(?), she said that sometimes people just won't show up to the 1st week of class, the school calls & they say they're not coming. So the waitlist can even move that 1st week of classes!

Which list are you on? Hopefully people who hear from the waitlist can check in to keep other people updated as to its progress : )

I know how you feel right now - I'm in the same boat & not loving it!

I am on the Gateway waitlist. Its the only school I marked off because I was working during the day, and planned to do that during school. I really hope people who got in have accepted other schools or choose not to attend at Gateway (is that horrible of me?). I have all my non-nursing classes completed, I am health-care certified CPR and everything is all set and ready.

When people don't show up the first week- do they pull of the waitlist? That seems incredible that people would show that sort of disrespect, but then again I guess its good news for the waitlisters!

Where are you waitlisted?

I was waitlisted at Gateway as well...

She said they do pull people off the waitlist as classes are beginning so those spots don't go to waste. Spots open up at the last minute for the spring semester as well - though that would be a long time to wait!

Also, she mentioned that people take themselves off the waitlist before a spot opens up, or say no to a seat opening up for the same reasons as those who say no originally...

Maybe people don't realize there are people waiting on their decision -- so if they decide in August that they're not going, they think it doesn't matter to anyone but them? Who knows...

Well- guess that is good news. Hopefully May 3rd will come around and some people decline admission (we can always hope). I wonder what happens to those people assigned to spring semester- do they get first dibs on the declined fall semester opening?

At this point I don't care whether is it fall or spring that I get into as long as I get in THIS YEAR! I can't imagine having to do this whole process again!

It would be nice to get updates saying something like... we are currently on #(blank) on the waitlist.

For Three Rivers we were also given a reply date of May 3rd. To the best of my understanding, some students after that will not fill the requirements on time- health questionnaires, required CPR training, etc. And there are the rude people that just don't show up. I don't think that spring semester students are offered fall semester spots, it's just the people on the waiting list. I think someone else already wrote it in this thread- last year Three Rivers placed all 13 students on their waitlist and then had openings for students on waitlists from other school. I know many schools have waitlists signifcantly longer than 13, I have no idea how likely they are to place a certain number. I wish you all the best of luck in getting placed for this year.

I decided to stick with my original intentions of going to BHSN. So for those who are on the NVCC wait list, you'll be happy to know that a spot will be open as soon as the May 3rd deadline lapses. Best of luck to all of you who will be attending the CC programs this Fall. :)
