why so mean?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hey fellow CNA's and student CNA's. I am currently in my last week of classes for my CNA training. Graduation is Friday. I love it. Figure this will be a great job while I am going to school for my Associate's for RN. York county nursing home, not bad. (This is in PA, if anyone is lost). Love the girls in my class. But please tell me, once you go on the floor for clinical, and lab, why are LPN's and fellow, already graduated CNA's so mean? Do they forget that they have been where we are trying to go? We are only trying to make your day go by smoother and easier, by doing all the dirty work, but meaningful for the residents. So hey cut us some slack. We don't need sarcasm, or being treated like what we are doing does not count or that you are so much better than us. We all fit in a wheel of care. Help us out and remember you was once me. Remember back to your first week on the floor. I love working in the health field, but some of our fellow nurses look down on us and make us feel worthless. How about tommorrow going to work and saying something nice to student nurses, or CNA's. Sometimes it can make a world of difference in the care that they give to the residents. This was said with love. Just was a little fed up today! P.S (and the teachers sometimes can go a little bit overboard with their remarks also, I believe we are all grown up, treat me with the respect I give you as an adult.

Don't listen to that mess...You just concentrate on learning all you can and realize that not every one feels this way....

Ouch that really hurts

I'm so sorry that you've encountered some mean people, unfortunately they do exist. I hope that when you start working as a CNA that you work with people who are positive and enthusiastic about new CNA's and students. Hey, we were all there once. Yes, it may take a you a little longer to complete a task. Oh well, I would much rather work with someone who takes their time and does a job correctly. The speed will come over time.

Please don't lose a positive attitute. If the first areas you work in doesn't appreciate students or new CNA's, find out if there is another area or shift that you can transfer to. Sometimes it takes a little while to find a good "fit".

Good luck!

thanks for the support, yes have moved to a different floor, Altztimer's unit. Think I'll stay there for a while, also 2nd shift seems a little more friendlier and helpful. Hope this is not what I am in for when I start my RN classes in January

thanks for your support. It's good to know that someone out there cares. It makes me wonder tho, if they treat us like this, what kind of treatment does their patients get?

Honestly, because students get inthe way. We are already short staffed and have too much too do in a short amount of time. Now, don't take this the wrong way, we are glad you take twice as long to do showers and 5 times longer to get vitals, you get stuff done, but your still in the way. Its very annoying! I'm sure this sounds rude and all, but its true. Once you get working in the field and have to train a student, you will understand. We don't ask to train you, you are given to us to deal with. But, don't get discouraged, once you are an actual employee and prove yourself a hard worker, you won't be looked down upon. Congrats on your graduation and good luck to you!

Thank you for providing the example of the kind of nurse i will never be.

A fine point! surely teamwork is the key, and valuing each persons contribution, regardless of job title. These power fiends that try to elevate themselves by dumping on others really pee me off, i hated bullies at school and i hate them in the workplace, and thats all these people are, bullies and unprofessional to boot. i always feel that if a student had a poor experience with me it would be more a comment on my proffessionalism and enthusiasm as a nurse, than on the ability of the student. As a wise man once said 'there is no such thing as a bad worker just bad leaders'.

Amen, I could not have put it better, thanks for your concern and much needed input

Sorry the truth hurts sometimes...but its the truth. No, I do not treat students badly and I'm not in school to be a nurse, but I am a student and a CNA. I know what its like to train a student and thats why some of the people I have worked with in training enjoy training me. I know when to get out of the way and when to jump in and help out. By remembering what it was like to be a student and train a student, has made me a BETTER student now (if that makes sense) Also, I treat my residents with respect and put on the happiest face for them. They come first (not the student) My attitude towards whiney students is left outside. I'm a favorite among my clients and I'm proud that they consider me one of the best. So, no, don't think I'm crazy or mean for being honest. If you are ever 4 people short on the floor, leaving 5 CNA's with 12 students to train on top of that chaos, you will understand that students get in the way and that is why the training staff can be so mean sometimes. Some of the best students were trained amongst the chaos in the facility I worked at and they now understand "why are they mean?" I'm not rude or crude or out to make people feel like crap, but if you are going to work with me, you are going to be trained to know your resident, multitask, be effecient and get the job done! Just because I care about my residents and want the best people caring for them doesn't make me mean, rude or crazy, just a caring person who actually gives a rats behind about patient care...

Y'all let's stick to the original concept OK?

Jen's pay it forward post is perfect. When I was a new hospital nurse, about 4 years into being an RN, I was LOST!

One thing that got me through many a rough day, was one old (like in her 70s) RN who worked night shift. Every day she'd see me, give me a big smile and say......"Hi P, glad to see you."

That was almost 30 years ago. I can still see her.

oh god!~ i hope i don't get assigned to someone with your perspective on incoming workers! i understand, only from reading, and of course personal experience, that nurses don't get enough help or respect. but for that reason-please try to give your fellow-soon-to -be-where-you-are fellow healers a little bit of respect. as you obviously are aware, it is a hard field to be in. i will try not to let your post discourage me from pursuing what i think will be a field to be proud of.

JJEZZZZ , without knowing it you have just made every student that reads this thread feel horrible about being a student. Did you forget what it's like to be a student???? Shame on you.....the OP did not need to hear crap like this.....and I just looked your not a nurse.....Well guess what looks like you are a nursing student or trying to be....your time is coming....

Thank God she's not a nurse. I'm a student and I couldn't believe what I just read. I feel better now that I know that this person isn't someone I would be looking to for guidence. If we are sooo in the way anyways, hows about giving us more direction or pointers, tips, etc.. Get us out of the way NICELY.. We are there to learn and help. Thank you txspadequeen921, for having a real thought about this.
