unfortunate fate

I can hardly believe it but I walked out of work tonight. This is not the type of thing I do but it was seriously “that bad.” …like people were talking about me would behind someone’s back except it was in front of me loud enough to make sure that not only I could hear it but so ANYONE who was on our wing could. Not the first time actually this happened but THIS was the loudest and most apparent …perhaps its just been building up and I’ve had enough today. I could go on justifying my action of walking out on a job but its pointless, it was not the right thing for me to do. Granted I didn’t do it immediately after the thought crossed my mind. I did try to continue on with the work as I have been trying to stick out this job (oh, did I mention I’ve only been there a month AND this was my first CNA job) but it was obvious to myself (and most those around me) I could not go on without having a humiliating I have to ugly cry for like 2 hours to subside the amount of frustration/anger I was experiencing …. What’s the point in writing? I have studying to do. Peace out! God bless and a special thanks to Tammy for being the coolest chick at BRnSC! :bluecry1:

I AM disappointed in myself and I can't help but wonder if this is the wrong field for me or if there is a right field for me. I liked working and caring for the patients. I believe I am good at it... only time can tell I suppose. I hate disappointing those people (especially my parents, even though I am a grown almost middle aged woman)....

Oh, I understand! I once had a job where, when I decided to quit, it took ALL my strength not to walk out. I stuck it out for the shift, but I quit that night when I would normally give proper notice.

I wouldn't assume that you're in the wrong field because of this. Sometimes people are catty, and maybe you just didn't get along with those particular people! Apply at other places, and don't give up. Focus on caring for your patients, because that's what matters, and if you know you're doing a good job, then you're in the right place.

I'm sorry you had a terrible first time out as a CNA. I can tell you that it may not be you, but the facility. To work in an environment where people talk about after you've only been there a month is horrible. Not to mention that your new to the field. That is just shameful of them. I don't blame you a bit for walking out. If they call you and ask why, tell them!

Try another place though. There are alot of really good places out there that can train you the way you should have been trained. I can't imagine them not training you longer if they felt you needed it.

In the meantime, relax and be thankful your outa there! Good luck

".....I AM disappointed in myself and I can't help but wonder if this is the wrong field for me or if there is a right field for me.....".

I'm the spoiler here. No field is right for you unless you can learn to act professionally. Walking out may make you feel better, but now you cannot even list this job on a resume, so it's as if you're starting out from scratch with no experience. You basically only hurt yourself and of course, the residents that need care and are now short a CNA.

It is certainly true that some environments (and their people) are much better than others. But this field has huge turnover. As soon as you get comfortable working with a set of people, they leave, get fired, or new management comes in, whatever....

So bottom line is that you need to learn from this experience and not repeat it.....

Ok maybe she should have stayed till the end of her shift if just for the sake of her patients but on the other hand perhaps the other people in her facility ought to act professionally and then these kinds of situations wouldn't arise. What is about our society that its excusable to treat others like dirt? So again...I would have stayed till the end of the shift, but if the OP was really being either directly or subtly harrassed by her co-workers then they deserved to be walked out on.

Maybe next time the Charge Nurse, DON, or whoever is in charge of the Torture Chamber will try to run their staff better so that newbie's aren't feeling abused to the point of walking off the job.

A month isn't long enough to adjust to your 1st CNA job, in my opinion. I hated my job for about 2 months in the beginning- I felt like I was being hazed. I was the 3rd girl in a row they hired because the 2 before me got fired or didn't make it through their training or whatever. This job has such a high turnover that I think a lot of the ones who have been there a while don't make it easy for the new ones until they know you can "hack it."

At your next job, stick it out. Remember that it WILL get better. Once they hire someone after you, you'll no longer be "the new girl"... be nice to her, and you'll have an ally!

If you did a public poll and ask what personality description would be best suited for work as CNA kindness and compassion would top the list.

The more I read this board the more I become convinced a CNA's personality type should be more of cross between Judge Judy and an armored tank.

I think thats because the perception of the job is so far from the reality of it. Its hard physical demanding work often involving the not so pretty sides of life. Your at the bottom of the medical totem pole, you don't get a whole lot of respect from anyone and its not easy to say the least.

I've had a blast in my class but honestly if this was a career I was looking at for the rest of my life, theres no way. I can not fathom how people do just cna work for years upon years. I'm looking at maybe six months until I go on to NA 2 and just getting through that will be hard. Cnas my heart goes out to you because this job is tough!

i am sorry thia happened to you.. some people are very disrespectful... rude and care nothing about anyone but their own nasty self...

what worries me... is they could turn you into the board for pt abandoment... i probably would of stayed the shift for this reason.... are you in school for nursing? that is the only thing that worries me..... i am a RN and i have known facilities that turn nurses and CNA's into the board for walking out in the middle of the shift,,,,it can be very serious charge from the BON , and may hinder you to further your career as a nurse,,,,, and if these kooks don't like you they are more likely to turn you in......

good luck to you and please keep me posted.... give yourself a hug for me....

Just what I was thinking! Hopefully they won't, but if they do it could be bad.
