Nursing Students CNA/MA

I am currently enrolled in nursing school 3 hours from where i lived. I have my lna and it expires on june 25th so i really need to get hours. I have applied to a LTC facility as well as a hospital in my hometown. I have 3 months of experience and i know someone who works at the hospital. What are the chances of me being hired just for holiday breaks and summer? I know it is a long shot but i figured that i would give it a shot. Does anyone have advice? Thanks

I'm not sure about arranging that with a hospital but LTC facilities generally need all the help they can get and are very flexible with schedules. I knew a ton of college students who only worked holidays and summers.

I think you would be better off trying a LTC/Nursing home place for finding a job to only work holidays and summer breaks. You can choose to go per diem and choose when to work so you can complete your hours. Good luck!

I'd check into ltc but as far as a hospital goes that's very unlikely. It may depend on the facility. Ours will hire students as pcas unless they are in their last year. At that point they can hired in as a nurse extern. However one of the stipulations at ours was you had to work at least 1 shift per week or resign your position. They absolutely want to hire students and essentially grow their own nurses but at the same time they need you to work as well. They've been burned by students too many times. Then you have people that have worked full time plus the entire time through nursing school

Only breaks and summers is unlikely, particularly in a hospital setting. You may try applying for on-call/per diem positions. Our per diem CNAs are required to work 3 shifts a month and can chose any open shift so it is pretty flexible in terms being able to work shifts that aren't when they are in classes/clinicals.

Look into home care too! In most areas nurse's aides are in demand for home care. You will be able to pretty much choose your hours. You may even be able to work per diem ...as in...when YOU are available.

Don't forget that you will have to have CEU's as well for re certification. A home care agency will be able to provide you with the CEU opportunities....not to mention, there is a very good possibility you will have some study time while at work when a client is napping.

You may want to consider agency work that has no minimum number of required shifts.

I worked for an agency that allowed me to work whenever I wanted. They did not fire me for not agreeing to work during a time in which id previously stated I was available.

Other agencies have a requirement that you show up if you put down that time as your availability.

My agency paid about half the amount of others, but I could not work for a week or for a month, as needed, and I still remained eligible for shifts.

It helps if you are very good at your duties when you do agree to work!
