First day of class- check! But I wanted to laugh @ the videos!!!!

I had my first day of STNA training, and so far so good. I feel a little naive, because I still have starry eyes about it. Even with all of the horror storiesI have heard and read, I am really looking forward to getting in there and working hands-on. I figure I have plenty of time to become jaded. LOL

The instructor showed a video that was kind of funny. It was like an "NA Orientation" video. The actors in it were so god-awful that it was humorous. It showed a bunch of senarios that were examples of what not to do. One of them was this NA ignoring a call light while the resident choked to death. This situation is far from funny, obviously, but it made me want to laugh because the acting was so terrible. There was another one where the resident says to the NA, "I'm so glad I haven't peed my pants in over a week". It just struck me as funny. I might be too immature to be an STNA. I guess we'll see! :D

We had a 1980's video of a full bed bath even the instructor found so bad she had to stop.

CNA is short, and the tests are memorization of steps and simple medical terms to pass. Tests are on an 8th grade level. You will be fine.

The videos are really awful...you're not alone on that one. Not only is the acting awful, the scenarios are unrealistic. In the real world, you won't have 4 patients who only need minimal assistance lol.

I enjoyed the videos, and laughed all the way through them, like on one a CNA yells down a crowded hall full of people "Mrs. Johnson did you have a BM today?"

Yeah, those NAs in the videos seemed to have all the time in the world! The one ignoring the call light was complaining about how the guy choking abuses call button, all the while filing her nails!:lol2:

Those were so terrible!! I had to bite my tongue and dig my fingernails into my arm to keep from laughing out loud, and even that didn't help!! I noticed that the guys tended to laugh a lot more than the girls.

We saw one where a CNA dressed up a resident as a giant Raggedy Anne doll, complete with red yarn wig and painted-on freckles. It was supposed to be serious in that we should protect our residents' dignity but I found it hilarious and implausible. If I'm old and want to dress up like Mickey Mouse, please let me. At least I'm happy while I'm doing it.

The vital signs video was bad, too, especially the rectal temperature part. I was still extremely shy and was *quite* shocked when they showed a resident's buttocks on the video. I felt so hot and uncomfortable and I sat and thought to myself "They're showing this, but there's no way they could ever be allowed to show a real rectum, is there." I was proved wrong surprisingly quickly when the CNA spread those cheeks apart. I laughed so hard as the actor said so casually, "Hey Mr. Smith!! I'm gonna put this up your orifice!!" as if it was a standard greeting like a handshake.

I do miss my CNA class (and its "innocence" if you know what I mean) but not those awful videos.

I totally agree as far as the movies go. I used to have to take no-doze pills to keep myself from falling asleep sitting up. I think you will do just fine, although hands on is DEFINITELY more fun than those step by step videos! Good Luck :)

The videos were particularly bad but I found the entire classroom portion of my CNA to be excruciating.

I am so glad I had a wonderful class. The other students were great, and I loved my teacher. She made the class fun and interesting. We were either laughing or crying or both on any given day.

The videos were horrendous though! LOL I too was shocked when they actually took a rectal temp on the man, I didn't think they would actually show it. And the video with the peri care on a man who obviously could do it himself. The whole room cracked up when he was asked if it was ok, and he put his hands behind his head and said "sure!" with a big smile on his face. The videos were pretty awful, but like our teacher said, it was either that or we had to have a volunteer in the class to show everyone!

...and the lady that needed assistance eating is the type of person that we're wondering WHY she is even IN the nursing home in the first place. She's AAO x3, independently ambulatory, and looks like she just got out a beauty parlor, yet she can't sip her own grape juice through a straw without help. Really??

Also love how everyone is all perfect and polite like they have lived in Mayberry their whole lives.

It's like everyone in their world is smoking opium before they record the videos.

I was a tech for a year, I've been a nurse for four and I STILL laugh at those stupid videos. I find myself cracking up at the CPR recert videos because they're dumb to me. But I've never laughed in a real emergency.

My favorite part is always the guy that falls from a great height and lands on his head and then gets electrocuted. What a day he is having!!

My favorite phrase ever:

"[pointing] YOU!!!! Call 911. Go get the AED."
