CNA-hospital/nursing home:S

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hello everyone, I am just beginning my nursing classes this summer:bugeyes: but I was wondering what advice anyone on here has about being a CNA... I am wondering if it is better to work as a CNA at a hospital or nursing home. As of now, i am at an assisted living home where Ill soon be learning to pass meds, but eventually will be moving to a smaller area without an assisted living facility.... I do not care much about pay, but I heard nursing homes pay more, but I would think that you would get to do more at a hospital, does anyone know what CNAS generally do at hospitals? and the pros and cons of each ??? Thank youuu... I love this site, I just found it and cant get enough!:redpinkhe

Specializes in Cardiac Telemetry, ED.

I worked as a CNA in LTC, home health, and at a hospital. Each experience was unique. As far as pay, the hospital paid the best and had the best benefits package. They also had a scholarship program and helped me pay for NS.

Hospitals pay better with better benefits. I personally think you will gain more experience being in a hospital setting than in a nursing home.

Nursing homes seem to pay more around here.

But that doesn't bother me because I'd rather work in acute care for a few dollars less. I enjoy it a lot more because of the variety.

I worked as a NA II at a hospital and I loved it!!! I worked on the cardiac surgery intensive care unit/ Cardiovascular Step Down unit (CSICU/CVSU) for a little over a year. I really got to experience some "cool" things which may be gross for some but I got to see the doctor crack open a cardiac surgery patient chest again after open heart surgery in the unit and assist on that code. I also loved the benefits and the PTOs...I plan on going back there once I get my nursing license. I got to use a lot of my NA II skills working there. (only bad thing I worked the 7P-7A shift...and I could never get use to it plus being away from home about 15 hours a day was not cutting it with a new baby).............I have also worked at a nursing home and I DID NOT LIKE that but it was closer to home and I was only 10 mins from home unlike the 45 min drive I had when I worked at the hospital. In my opinion workwise I would chose the hospital over a nursing home any day!!! :D

If you like routine, time management, very little deviation from norms, and forming lasting bonds with patients, you may want to work at a nursing home.

If you like seeing new faces all the time and being exposed to the widest range of conditions, procedures, and pathologies, you may prefer to work at a hospital.
