I just finished my MSN and am planning to take the Adult Health CNS exam in a couple of months. Any suggestions for studying for the exam? Any suggestions for study materials? Thanks in advance.

What did you do in your clinicals? I am still confused about the role of CNS. As a CNS, where would you work? and what kind of responsibilities would you carry out?

Is CNS certification exam available in all states? Or is it only in certain states? Thank you so much for your reply and guidance. Sorry, I didn't have answer for your question, but if you do find an answer, please share.

I'm an adult health CNS as well as a Peds CNS. I practice in IL, CNS's practice in various roles in all 50 states.

With the new ANCC consensus model coming soon, CNS will be an advanced practice nurse (APRN) role also.

I've been an APRN since 2006 and practice alongside NPs and PAs, doing the same job. In my area, the CNS role is that of a person with at least an MSN (some with DNPs) who practice under the medical model of care: see a pt, assess them, order/interpret labs/tests, diagnose, write scripts, reassess.

However, with the Consensus Model coming out, CNS will be and APN in ALL states.

Thanks for the clarification traumaRUs. I hadn't realized that the CNS role was not recognized as APN in some states.

How will the consensus model change those board regulations in those states that do not recognize the CNS as an advanced practice nurse?

I am not sure the consensus model will change this. Won't each of those states have to change the regulations? This was the whole problem a few years ago with the White Paper where CNS organizations wanted to change their title to call themselves Nurse Practitioners, instead of approaching those states where they are not recognized as advance practice.D

Is there a list of these states? I am curious to see which states do not recognize CNS as advanced practice nurses.

@sailornurse... If you go to http://www.ncsbn.org. The national association of state boards of nursing, you will find updated maps of the state by state implementation of the aprn consensus model. Also if you google Kelly Boudreau CNS blog, you will find some well articulated blog posts of the proposed and possible updates to the CNS role.

I have also googled aprn legislative updates, and similar search words, and there are documents showing the state by state legislation in progress.

I think there is money behind the legislative efforts for lobbyists and there does seem to be commitments from nursing organizations so there may be more progress..

All I can see is about 8 states that have enacted legislation but nothing specifics on the legislation, 8 states that have pending legislation and again no specifics. That leaves alot of states to go. Where does one look to see if the legislation is standardized?

I tried googling the above and no luck, the same as trying to find out which states do not recognize CNS as APN, only because I was curious which states these are and am wondering if it will be more difficult to get them on board. Curious to see if these are the same states that are also difficult for NP's, that is that require the Board of Medicine to supervise NP's , those type of things.

Yes, I agree that it would be interesting to have specific legislations and progress toward aprn consensus listed where we could all see it..

Thank you for correcting the spelling of her last name, you are correct, her blog is very informative and direct. I would like to see standardization issues as sometimes what is adapted for one type of provider is copied for another similar provide.
