OB Summer Reads

Since I haven't received any replies to the post that I made in "Recommended Reading", I thought that I might bring this down here to see if I got a few more responses. After all, these aren't really "academic" books, but reading aimed at the general population. These books are for "entertainment" purposes generally.

Summer seems to have started early this year. It's already hot and humid, and in my free time, all my body wants to do is pick up a good book and read read read. I'm definitely in my "Summer Read Mode." I dare not go on Amazon anymore because that "one-click order button" is really getting dangerous for me! :)

A few years ago I read "Baby Catcher" by Peggy Vincent. I loved the book but I've read it soooo many times - I need something new. Over the weekend, I ordered "The Diary of a Midwife" and "Immaculate Deception II" (Susanne Arms). They will arrive tomorrow, but I'm just wondering if anyone has ever read them. Have I made some good book choices here? If you've read them, what did you think? Is "Diary" anything like "Baby Catcher"? How do they compare?

Even though these books are already on their way, I'm wondering if I've made some good choice and curious to what I have to look forward to. Any comments are appreciated. After I've read them, I'll post a little review here if anyone is interested.

If you've got a book that's "easy" summer reading material, please share if you think that it's worth it. Yes, I know that we have a sticky for books, but I didn't get any replies, and I'm looking for books that aren't really academic in nature, although I really learn a lot from any book that I read - especially if it applies to OB. Thank you!

Happy Summer Reading everyone! :balloons:

Bill Clinton was a midwife??? :rotfl:

I'm not even going to dwell on that one.... :)

heheeh

think i will pass

I'm with you Smilin... whether he was a midwife or not (he was "with woman" though... OK, I won't go there ;)) I've got better things to read. After the disrespect he showed at the Reagan funeral today, I'm not interested in what he has to say.

what did he do? I missed it; no TV on today.

Sorry for the delay Smilin... I'm going to Colorado for a week and I've been so busy. ACK! I shouldn't even be here now!

Anyhow... from what I understand, he felt that he didn't need to show his credentials or something to get into the funeral - I'm not sure if I had this correct, MSNBC was stating that something he did showed great disrespect to the former president. Also, he feel asleep at the funeral!!! He was shown on TV several times asleep - the camera finally quit going to him because he was asleep so much. And Hillary had this awful look on her face - just an impatient look.

While I'm not sure who I'm voting for this fall, I won't watch the funeral of Clinton because he showed so much disrespect. :stone

OMG that is horrible, mother-baby! SUCH blatant disrespect and lack of class.

I just finished a great book called "A nurse's story" by Tilda Shalof. I took it on a road trip with me and couldn't put it down....I was done it in two days (good thing I wasn't driving). It is a biography of sorts from a 20 year experienced ICU nurse. It follows her from student to present and brings in laughter, tears, anger, and happiness without the typical bashing the system stories that we hear a lot of lately. This book really made me smile and do a lot of thinking at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone....nurse or not.

Renee :p

No need to be hateful, people! Why is it that nurses are some of the most hateful creatures on earth?

oh sheesh, no one is being hateful. anyhow any other summer reads suggested???

No one is being hateful, just reporting on what happened. Fair and balanced.

Anyhoo, back to our summer reading... I'm now reading Immaculate Deception II. If anyone gets time to check this one out, it's a very fascinating read. I'm not finished with it yet, but it details birth through the ages, starting with a woman in a tribe hundreds (a thousand??) years ago, goes through the Victorian Era, and I've just read about the mom who gave birth in the 60's. It's just amazing how attitudes about birth have changed through the ages. I did not read the original ID; I head that the author's tone was too strong. It has been apparently toned down - it's absolutely worth it if you get the chance.

*sigh* Earlier this year I was going into business with some other doulas. These were new doulas and I felt that they were taking advantage of me. I was stupid and loaned them A LOT of my childbirth/PP books. Since the business proposition ended badly, these people are refusing to return my books - about $200 worth USED. I'm probably not going to get these books back and since most of them were reference books, I'm going to have to start replacing them - slowly. I think I'm going to start with "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin - another awesome book! Next is going to be "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers." This one I had not owned before, but I'm going to get it because I believe it would come in very handy for some of my PP clients. Has anyone read this? What do you think? I know that it's on the list of DONA's required reading for PP Doulas.

Has anyone seen/read this one? What did you think?

I appreciate your help! :)

Happy reading!!

I highly recommend any book by Penny Simkin. I love her!

And that Ultimate Book of Breastfeeding Answers----GOOD ONE, our LC has one in her office for our reference. GREAT book.

I love "The Birth Partner"! I have it as suggested reading for the spouses or other partners if they are interested. It was one of the books I constantly read. I'm really upset that it won't be returned. However, I can get the Second Edition. I agree with you, Smiling - it's an awesome, no nonsense guide to childbirth.

Thanks for the info on the breastfeeding book. I thumbed through it at Barnes and Noble and I think I'm going to get it! It really did look like an awesome book and I'm looking forward to getting that one as well!
