York vs. UofT [Accelerated Nursing]

Hey everybody,

I have done tons of research and have decided that I will like to go to either York or UofT for their accelerated nursing programs. I would like to ask students who are currently in the program or graduates a.couple of questions.

1) I have heard that UofT provides better placements compared to york ie. Major downtown hospitals. Is this true?

2) Is it hard to maintain a high GPA at UofT compared to York - since there is more theory at UofT?

3) Does York provide placements in all areas of your choice, or is based on whatever is available?

4) If you had a choice, would you change schools? If so, why?

I will appreciate all help and feedback. Don't hesitate to tell me any other experiences you had during your time in the program!

Generally U of t is considered the better school. If you have a choice i would go there.

I don't know about York U but being in the program, I've had really good placements so far. I've been at hospitals like Toronto General and Sick Kids and my friends have been at Mount Sinai, St. Michael's, Sunnybrook etc so I do think we get really good placements. U of T has really good relationships with these hospitals.

In terms of maintaining a high GPA, I think it really depends on how much work you put it in but our averages have been relatively high for all courses so far (B+) considering most of the courses in my other undergrad had averages of low 70s. I should mention that there are a lot of papers in this program so if you do choose to go to U of T, be prepared to write a lot!

I'm in the YorkU program right now. People in my program have had placements in both downtown Toronto and throughout the GTA, it mostly depends on where you live.

You should probably do some research to find out more about the clinical rotations each program offers. At York we do LTC, rehab, med-surg, community, mental health or paeds (it's one or the other, and you do not get to pick) , and then IP/consolidation in the unit of your choice. I am not 100% sure but I think UofT does maternity, and both mental health and paeds as well.

Most importantly, I think you should speak to someone who is currently in their first year because they'll be writing the NCLEX as opposed to the CRNE (this Oct is the last CRNE). I don't know for sure, but I am assuming that the content of the courses has been changed to better prepare students for the NCLEX.

@Cee023 - Thanks a lot for your help! By any chance do you live near the campus or are you commuting? I live near Markham/Pickering, so i'm not sure if it would be beneficial for me to live near campus.

@heartstrings - Thanks for your reply! If I live in the Markham/Pickering area, would it still be possible to get placements in Downtown, Toronto? Would it help if I have access to a car? I really want placements in the downtown core; especially for my final consolidation.

@rajm I'm commuting from Markham as well. My first two placements were closer to home but my recent placements were in downtown. It's true that it does depend on where you live sometimes but either way, you will end up with some placements in downtown. I'm in my first year so I'm not sure how it works for your final consolidation but if I find out, I'll let you know!

and heartstrings is right! Our placements include maternity and geriatrics in first term, which are followed by mental health, pediatrics and med-surg (the order varies depending on which one you're placed in first).

I've just been accepted to Bloomberg, starting in Sept. I'm just finishing my HBA from U of T in Health Studies. I'm not sure if this affects things as far as placements, but I do know that a lot of the downtown hospitals are affiliated with the University of Toronto... So it might be easier to get placements at those hospitals as a u of t student. But I don't know for sure. :s I hope that's at least semi-helpful.
