George Brown RPN placements?

Hi everyone!

Well I have started my Pre-Health course and I am finding it really easy and fun!

I just need some input from RPN's. So yesterday I had the unfortunate experience of attending a group where these 2 young women were in the RPN program at George Brown and were saying that it was only Geriatrics, now granted there is nothing wrong with that except the fact that I thought RPN's had a broader range of practice not just in seniors homes.

Can someone help me in clarifying where George Brown RPN students are placed for clinicals? Is it all long term care? Or is it that they start in long-term care and move on to hospitals late down the line?

The reason I'm asking this is my ultimate goal is to be in the OR as an OR tech, I know I have to take a post-grad course for this after RPN.

I'm a George Brown grad.

I had four placements:

1st semester - LTC (Copernicous Lodge), I think everyone does LTC the first semester.

2nd semester - Orthopedic Rehab (Providence, hospital part)

3rd semester- Med/Surg (Scarborough Grace Hospital)

4th semester (pre-grad) Acute surgical (Scarborough General Hospital)

A lot depends on where you live and luck. I know people that got LTC and weren't happy about it at the time but ended up loving it. Someone got L&D, someone else got peds.

There are key things I learned in each kind of placement:

LTC- washing, transferring, drugs, vital signs. In subsequent semesters it's all about the drugs...there are so many

Med/Surg- a little about everything, a good intro into acute care

Acute Surg- dressings, ostomy, blood transfusion, IV therapy, drugs (especially narcotics), ecg, transeferring, admitting and discharge.

I just wanted to get more information about the placements :)

My girlfriend and I are in the program together. It seems that we can be switched to different schedules due to placements.

If we live in the same apartment...then wouldn't we both be switched and not separated??

Anyone know what is the likelihood of being separated in different sections?

If so is there anything we can do?

What would living in the same apartment have to do with anything? yes you can be switched to different placements sites and maybe different schedules. You can ask to stay together but they are not obligated to do that.Good luck.

I'd say pretty good that you will be in different sections. No school is going to place people together because they can commute. Just as most employers won't hire people who are in a relationship for the same shift pattern.

You can complain but expect to be turned down. I saw car pools broken up because of placements.

It's not the school's job to worry about things like this.

I actually spoke to the school today and they said that they would accommodate us and definitely they try to keep people together, especially if they live together.
