Algonquin college RPN program application & HPAT assessment

I'm still new to this, and I find this website extremely helpful. I'm currently a junior in high school and I've always been interested in the health care field. My main goal is to become a health care administrator but I first want to become an RPN (I've always wanted to be a nurse and I need the experience, RPN seems like the best choice for me right now). The program at Algonquin college seems great and would be the most convenient for me since I live close by. When I apply next year, during the fall term, I have to take a HPAT test. I tried the sample questions for the English and math part and it's fairly easy... But there's no sample questions for the science part. I was just wondering if any of you have taken this test, it would be great if you told me your experience with not only the test (specifically the science part) but the program itself. Also is this program very competitive and hard to get into? Thank you so much for your time - Judy

I am not in the RPN program at Algonquin college, I am in the BScN program. But I did the HPAT test. For the science part, they are asking a lot of questions about biology and chemistry. I did the test since I did though of going into the RPN if I got refuse for the BScN. Try looking up at other colleges like St Lawrence or others that offer the RPN program, they also need to take that test. But if you can't find it, if you still have your grade 9-10 sciences notes and your grade 11-12 bio/chem notes would still suggest physic just in case use them to study for the test. It helps.

Not part of your question: But Algonquin has a bridge from RPN to RN with Ottawa U. You need an average of I think 75% and work a year in the RPN field before you can get admitted it. If you have question about the bridge, send an email to the program coordinator.

Thanks, I'm just really nervous I won't be accepted since I'm guessing my average will be around 75-85 next year. Hope there isn't any too much physics involved since I didn't take that class. I'll definitely look at other colleges. Really appreciate it ktrop03 :)

You will need an average of 85 or higher to get a guaranteed acceptance into Algonquin. Good luck.

No problem. I would also look at other colleges for the RPN in case you do not get in. Like JaguarX said the average is high. But other than that, if you are in the preU straight you shouldn't have a problem to get accept it.

Why do you feel every RPN needs to bridge? You bring it up frequently. You must be aware that RNs are facing layoffs in many areas, and that becoming an RPN is a perfectly fine END goal?

I've noticed a lot of people do that on this website. Do people in the health field look down on RPN's? I think it's a respectable job even if you don't go through the four years of school. The reason why I want to get into that program isn't because it's "easier", but because it'll open the most doors for me. So if I do enjoy it, maybe I will bridge. But it's mainly because I think I'll enjoy the job and so I can gain the experience I need to get back to school and become a health care administrator. One more question- what's the typical day of an RPN? Thanks guys :)

Also does anyone know if you get extra points for taking U classes? Or do they not look at it at all... I'm definitely gonna step up my game and strive for higher marks! :) Are there any students in an RPN program who could tell me what school is like and if they're enjoying it? Sorry if I'm bombarding everyone with questions I just really want to make this dream a reality.

I found this really helpful for the test. The practice questions are similar to the ones on the test. Keep your Biology and Chemistry notes and look them over. The essay and reading comprehension parts are simple, easiest part of the exam. The essay part is timed btw.

Yes, some physics questions are involved. If you took Physics you shouldn't have any trouble. I never took physics so I couldn't study for that part.

Have you written your AC-HPAT? I'm travelling from Nova Scotia to Ontario just to write it in December and I'm looking for some information about it. Any help??
