Where to volunteer in Sacramento area?

U.S.A. California

Hi, I am a new grad from August and am looking for somewhere in the Sacramento/ El Dorado County area to volunteer where I can keep my nursing skills up to date. I'm still looking for a job and just need somewhere to feel useful! Any information or leads are much appreciated.

Specializes in School LVN, Peds HH.

I live in El Dorado County :)

You may want to try Marshall Hospital, Mercy in Folsom, Sutter (there are quite a few) or even UC Davis. I'm not sure you'll be able to use your nursing skills, but you might get your foot in the door thru volunteering!

Specializes in ICU.

I would highly recommend NOT volunteering at Mercy General. The program is supposed to be for new-grad RNs to help them get hired, yet they threaten to "ban you for life" from CHW if you don't fulfill a 6 month commitment. I guess that's no problem for someone who gets a job at CHW, but it's a raw deal for anyone who is lucky enough to get hired elsewhere. Plus, if you even miss one day of volunteering, they put a "do not hire" notation in your file. Seems to me, the volunteer program just opens you up to criticism and does more harm than good. Plus, the recruiter there is absolutely worthless.

I'd recommend UC Davis...the recruiter there is helpful and they hire a lot of BSN new grads.
