Trying to be an RN on the central coast of California!

U.S.A. California

Hello :wink2:

Is anyone familiar with Cuesta College in SLO? I've submitted my application, now I'm preparing to take the TEAS test. I'm curious what my chances are of getting in any time soon. I'd love to hear from anyone who's familiar with their nursing program!

@lolliloo,

I think I might apply just in case as a back up plan if I don't get into the RN program at Cuesta. I am pretty limited to Cuesta and Hancock for staying in the central coast here. I just got accepted into a CNA program at Bayside and starting soon so I would have my CNA cert by the application timeline. The Nursing facilities offering the CNA program have so many different classes during different times I had to wait it out longer than I expected to start the class at Bayside.

Does anyone happen to know the cut off points for the program? Or prior applicants who got into the program and how the clinicals/experience was with Cuesta?

I highly doubt that the school will lose their accreditation as they have begun to make changes in terms of the number of staff and the facilities. Cuesta RN did have a higher NCLEX passing rate on the CA State Board site than Hancock. I just really wished Hancock did not have their scaffolding organization into getting in their RN program...

@ms chia and others,

i got this information recently about the cuesta program and thought i'd share here:

"nursing students can expect to be in academic classes 2 days a week and then in clinical another two days. there are also open lab hours that may be required, which could mean a student would spend several hours on a 5th day, here on campus. the rn program is only held on weekdays. the first years are in class m&t and in clinical on w&th. the second year students have the reverse schedule."

re: hancock's scaffolding program, i agree -- i wonder, too, if cuesta might be moving in that direction slowly since they're now requiring the cna for application to the lvn. i really would rather not drive all the way to santa maria for class and clinicals either.

@ lolliloo

Have you heard of Cuesta's accreditation issue early this month??

Sucks that the Nursing program is doing great with high NCLEX passing rates but the community college itself is not doing well.

We have less than a month to hear back from Cuesta but now I'm nervous about what's going to happen in October when they review the recommendations and issues to be fixed.

:uhoh3:

@Ms.Chia

Yes, I've been following Cuesta's accredidation issues. It sure is scary.

The one comforting thought that's come up is that someone told me that when community colleges have "gone under" in the past, they often become satellite schools of other community colleges.

I only applied to Cuesta, as I'm determined to stay local to SLO, so all I can do at this point is hang tight and hope for the best!

Lolliloo

@Ms.Chia,

I got in (application score = 85). I got your PM but the system wouldn't let me message you back because I don't have "quality points" or something.

I hope you move right up that wait list. Do you know what # you are?

Loliloo

I'm #7 on the list! What's funny is #7 is my favorite number! Ha. Go figure. :rolleyes: But still getting in is not out of reach.

Congrats on making it though, Loliloo!!! :cheers: :w00t:

I'll be calling their automated message system like almost every hour to check on my status. Lol. Maybe I'll see you in the upcoming class!
