Samuel Merritt University Nursing Reputation

U.S.A. California

Published

I am starting the ABSN program this Fall 2009 in San Francisco, and I have heard certain things on the reputation of Samuel Merritt's nursing program. Because I'm wondering of the job outlook after graduating next year, I am curious to hear what others have heard or know regarding the reputation of Samuel Merritt nursing graduates, whether they're good or bad. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This school samuel merritt university/college's nursing program is not that highly rated and franckly a waste of money. The instructors are of out date and still lost in the 1950's. They are great baby sitters, but not good for instucting. Most have no clue on proper up to date techniques. They seem to not worry about it, because no one, wants to teacher there. Nice job security. They play favorites, politics and if they dislike you or you don't lick their perianal area, they'll kick you out of the program. Good luck to you 2+2ers this fall. It is so sad that there is such a shortage of nursing schools in the Bay Area. This school does have good programs; nursing isn't one of them. My advice is to look into a real RN program like, San Jose State, Cal State Hayward, UCSF I think has something or flat out go to another area, because the the bay area hospitals are not hiring any new grads for a while. A long while. In addition Merritt College, Chabot, Olhone and other Community colleges have great programs, but getting the classes are tough. This is the general consent of most alumni (75%+), that tolerated the egomaniacal people there. There will be those that come to the aid of this program and staff, but those are the ones that drank, hung out in hot tubs, and went to dinners with the "teachers".

I dont know about most of you all, but I was just accepted into the ABSN program at SMU and I am thrilled. All thoughtout CA, nursing programs are heavily impacted. Furthermore alot of schools go on a lottery basis. So from an acceptance point of view, I dont really care about the school so long as I can meet the requirements to get my RN license......I am happy.

From a job perspective, the interview and the possiblities are yours and yours alone. School can only take you so far. I am switching careers, I am going from Electircal Engineering to Nursing....so you don't get anymore extreme than that. And I know from over 14 years working experience a schools reputation is not all that important.

When you look at a schools reputation, you will always get some people who are happy and some who are unhappy. But again I ask, why care? So long as its accredited, and you got accepted, and can achieve your RN what difference does it make? Food for thought.

"But again I ask, why care? So long as its accredited, and you got accepted, and can achieve your RN what difference does it make?"

Oh, you SHOULD care. I had that same attitude and wish I could have known then what I know now. I am a former student of SMU. Do NOT waste your money. It was honestly one of the most bizarre school experiences I have ever had. Myself and many of my classmates regret spending the fortune that we did, especially now that the job market in the Bay Area has completely tanked. It is saturated with new grads trying to find jobs. SMU acted like it was doing me a favor. Their administration and their faculty are filled with aging nurses who are burned-out and worn out from their rigid routine.

Anyone reading this likely has a strong passion to become a nurse. If you've read posts by nurses saying don't spend a fortune for your education, they are 100% CORRECT. If you really want it that badly, like I did, choose the least expensive route. Don't graduate with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. There's absolutely no reason to have to do that. And steer clear of SMU.

Thanks for your honesty. But its just one opinion. I know 3 recent SMU grads from San Matron and Oakland and all three were happy with the program, passed the NCLEX and say they would do it all over again. Yes there are loans but they feel very prepared. Two are already working in area hospitals and one is still looking. School is what u make of it for yourself and there are ways to maximize opportunities in this job market. I will attend SMU Oakland in May after 15 years in computer technology and I can't wait!

I tried everything in my power to apply the 'school is what you make of it' principle to SMU. I continued to have experiences where I was treated like a number, or a kindergartener. I would say that if you do start school at SMU, at no point should you let them (the faculty or administration) treat you as though they are doing you a favor. If you are a student there, it is because you worked your ass off taking your prereq's, taking the ridiculous TEAS exam, etc. If you are a student there, you have RIGHTS, not PRIVELEGES. Don't let them convince you otherwise.

just curious, how much is tuition per semester at SMU?
