Redding

Does anybody work in the Redding,Cal area? What is the pay like and how expensive is it? Weather? I have done some research on it but would like personal experience if possible. Thanks! Flibble

I lived in Redding, but did not work in either of the hospitals. That was back in 1997-98. I did take a critical care course at Mercy -- I thought the nurses in my class were very unfriendly and cliquish. That was then, though. I did like Redding as a place to live. It's pretty and surrounded by spectacular places and sights. At that time, the cost of living was relatively low.

Hope that helps some.

I live pretty close to Redding but don't work there. It is a very nice place to live, mild winters, rain, and very pretty and green right now. It does get hot in the summer. There are two main hospitals, Mercy Medical Center and Redding Medical Center. RMC is for sale at this time but has had really good evaluations on their staff. I think it is like all hospitals, there are probably good and bad. I'm not sure of pay scale but I'll PM a friend who works at a surgical center in Redding to see if she can give you an idea.

We were down there today and it was pouring rain this afternoon. Took our kids to the park before it started.

Specializes in NICU.

Steph's being nice, winters can be cold, wet, sometimes snow....summers are HOT, HOT, HOT. It's not far to Shasta, lake and mountain. Water sports are very popular. My son has lived there for several years, loves it. Housing is getting expensive, but I don't think the pay is bad....they do give relocation pay and bonuses (at least at Mercy). The town has grown tremendously over the last few years, it's a pretty good shopping center, and lots of restaurants. Sacramento is only about 2 1/2 hours away.

Hope that helps!

See you in a couple of weeks, Steph!

Thanks everybody for the replies. I live in South Dakota so the winters would probably seem like a dream to me. I am not crazy about really hot. Maybe if the humidity wasn't too bad. It looks like beautiful country out there at least on the computer it does. Food for thought! Thanks everybody. Flibble

My husband and I met while working at RRedding Medical Center. The scenery there is beautiful, thats why we both moved there in the first place.

I never worked at Mercy. RMC has gone through many difficulties lately....a big shake down over their main Cardiologist and CV surgeon doing unnecessary procedures...they were the big money makers for the hospital. So I am guessing that their heart program isnt what it used to be. I loved the hospital and the nurses that I worked with. The economy in Redding is poor, and has one of the highest welfare rates in the state....most sex offenders also...

But....it is a nice place if you like outdoor activities....

Good luck

...I ended up moving there because when I drove through I thought it was so beautiful and I couldnt get over Lake Shasta....it was a totally random move that I dont regret!

NOT humid . . .but still hot. Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown Lake, Mt.

Lassen all nearby.

You could also choose to work in a surgery center. Great pay, no weekends, no holidays.

I was all over northern California last November. I thought Redding was very pretty, people were nice. If you love outdoor activity - it's pretty solid place to live.
