King Drew NICU

U.S.A. California

Anyone worked here or know what's happening with this unit?

King Drew (aka, "Killer King") is not the place you want to go. Many of us have posted here before about the problems at this hospital. Suggest you do a search to read all the gory details. At last report (according to the LA Times), they are using over 60% of temp RN's because none of the locals will work there.

I thought the name sounded familiar. This place even got attention nationally about 2 years ago, for all the wrong reasons. The JCAHO website says their current status is "denial of accreditation". If you click on "denial of accreditation" on the JCAHO site, it says "all appeals, attempts to fix problems, etc.", have been exhausted (not an exact quote, but thats the idea).

This sounds like the kind of place a nurse would go if he or she wanted to change from a "licensed nurse" to a "formerly licensed nurse".

Plainly, I don't think any prospective employee would want to touch this facility with a 10-foot pole.

Yeah, I know all about the King Drew saga, I wasn't asking about that. I want to know what is happening with their NICU/OB coverage.

I met a nurse from New Orleans wh was hired there and left in her second week. She was peds, not NICU. Our NICU has has an increase in patients. Rumor is that the NICU is closed at MLK and patients are going to "Big County" or LA County-USC.

I just don't have the patience to read minutes of the LA County Board of Supervisors meetings. They are available, hundreds of pages, in PDF. Perhaps in all that there are a few lines about the King Drew NICU.

Would you hire this administrator? http://jamenair.com/html/Profiles/VPWomenshealth.html - Los Angeles County, Department of Health Services 1976-2001

Actually he or she was there from 1976 to 2001. Most of that time MLK was a fine hospital.
