I want to start a support thread for us unemployed New Grads in California

U.S.A. California

Hey yall. I want to start a support thread for us unemployed New Grads in California. I've recently lost a lot of my hope and optimism for finding a New Grad position. I graduated in May with my BSN and I've applied for about over 100 positions at this point and I've gotten one interview. The rejection and lack of options has taken a toll on me. I literally made an Excel spreadsheet of almost every New Grad program with information/dates/links in the state PLUS almost every hospital in the state with links to their job listings that I check multiple times a week with notes from their HR dept about if they hire New Grads. Part of what makes it worst is when "outsiders", I know they mean well, mention oh why don't you apply at this hospital or be a traveler or there's a shortage you'll get a job soon, etc. You just want to scream :arghh: I realized the best way to get through this is with the support of those in your shoes. Although we are in competition with each other we can help each other through the tears, hissy fits, and psychotic laughter.:roflmao:

I got the idea for this thread from another thread posted here on allnurses: https://allnurses.com/nursing-first-job/unemployed-new-grad-797292.html

I'm not saying we all need to meet in groups in our own areas (it's nice it comes about). But I want this to be a place for us to vent and support each other. If you're like me and you're so depressed that your mom gave you one of your Christmas presents early (It was a Tweety Bird robe) to try and cheer you up then please come and I have a virtual box of Kleenex and a pat on the back for you.:sorry:

One thing I learned in nursing school is that icebreakers can really do good sometimes so you're welcome to use the following to introduce yourself.

I've been employed as a BSN RN in L.A. since 2007. It really is a tough market here, everywhere in CA, for ANY nurses including new grads.

I've done stints in Public Health, ambulatory day clinic, home health, and now I'm in case management. I am on a couple of hiring committees and regularly review resumes and interview potential RNs.

I just wanted to stop by and offer hugs and support. I have lots of good advice and insight into "systems" but only wanna give it if asked :)

Everyone hang in there. Hopefully 2013 will see the market loosen up a bit!

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement! I know we need it sometimes :( It's wonderful to see an established nurse come by and offer help. Please give us and other new grads as much advice as possible!

Has anyone given any thought to working in a nursing home? A lot of family members and friends have suggested that I start there first.

I haven't because I tried to stay focused on acute care. Now I'm thinking about more public and community health because I have a huge interest in that in addition to NICU. I actually have an interview Monday for a school nurse position so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :D

Hello my name is Jassy and I’m an unemployed New Grad.

License type: ADN/BSN in May 2013

Time out of school: 1 year

# of positions applied to date: probably 80-100

Dream RN position: Telemetry

Hospital experience:None, but I plan on volunteering

Where do you live: Irvine

What are you doing now: RN to BSN and spending time with my family

Favorite color: Pink

How you cope with unemployment: My husband is professionally successfully. I just relocated to CA from AZ in late Dec. 2012. In AZ I was having terrible trouble finding an acute care position as a new grad. I am trying to stay positive and prayerful. I never expected that I would experience such a circumstance in healthcare. I am ready to heal the world with my knowledge that I worked hard for.

Hi Jassy and welcome! As a sugesstion are you EKG certified? That would be great on your resume for Tele! And I think it's interesting that you said AZ has a "bad" market. I have a classmate who got a position there and I was thinking about checking it out since it's just a little Hop to the East. And for the record, I think you will be a fantastic nurse because it's awesome to see someone wanting to get out there to touch and heal. Sometimes I'm so wrapped up in my debt and trying to find a job that I sometimes forget why I got in to nursing in the first place.

I realize most of you new grads want to work in a hospital setting but if you are willing to give public health nursing a try and think outside of the box (or hospital) there are open positions for new grads in Stanislaus county and Merced county in CA. I have worked as a PHN for 10 years and love it! I did work for 10 yrs in L&D after graduating -yes I'm old : ) and would NEVER go back to hospital nursing. I am completing my MSN with a focus in PH and global health. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions -keep in mind in CA you have to have a BSN and a PHN cert from the BRN.

Hi MandaRN94,

For some reason I can't send a private message, I think because I haven't been active on this site in awhile, but anyways I'm interested in public health nursing, do you know if there are any openings in San Diego area? I was a community health educator in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua, and public health has always interested me, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting the PHN cert and whether there are jobs in my area?

Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Thanks for starting this thread!!

@ helpmepassNCLEX-to get a PHN cert you had to have graduated from a BSN program then need to apply for a PHN to the BRN and pay the fee. I'm not sure about San Diego Co but if you look up their county website it would show any openings. I have done volunteer nursing in Nicaragua also and loved it! Good luck! -let me know if you have any other questions.

I can help you with the PHN certificate info. First you must have your BSN! Once you get your RN license you go to the BRN website and print the application for the PHN license. You need to send in a $75 check or money order as well. It also says transcript but they already have it since your school needed to send it for your NCLEX eligibility. You need to fill out the section where it stated you took the required hours for the Child Abuse course work. Hopefully your school would have gone over this with you so you can just put the course number, name, and number of hours. You don't have the even renew the license and you have it for life! Good luck :)

Nursing homes in my area want 1+ yrs of experience too.

So true. The (irksome) two phrases I have been noticing when I am applying to RN jobs, whether they be nursing homes or in the hospital: 1) 1+ years of experience required 2) "No New Grads (need) Apply."

Ugh, don't get me started on the "no new grads" phrase. It's like we have a contagious disease!!
