COC Fall 2012

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi! I'm starting this thread for people who are starting the RN program at COC for Fall 2012. I'm so excited i was chosen and can't wait for the orientation and to finally begin the program.

Is anybody else here starting skills lab on the 23rd? Do you guys know exactly where in Henry Mayo we meet? There is no "coc skills lab" on the Henry Mayo map. Thanks!

@Rishybugg - So funny you should ask... I am also starting skills lab on the 23rd and was wondering the same thing. I drove by there today and its really easy to find its right accross from the parking structure. So when you drive into the main hospital (hospital is in front of you) and make a right towards the parking structure you will see it on the left side directly accross from the parking structure. It has COC listed on the outside of the building and everything. Now if I could only find my stethoscope I would be good to go :)

Hope to meet you on Thursday :)

Does anyone know for sure what they mean by the following COC Catalog entry listed under Program Requirements (for nursing students enrolled in the program during and after Fall 2011)?

Plus eleven units from the following options:

BIOSCI-221 Introduction to Microbiology . . . . . .5.00

ENGL-101 English Composition . . . . . . . . . . . .3.00

OR

ENGL-101H Honors English Composition . . . . .4.00

PSYCH-101 Introduction to Psychology . . . . . . .3.00

OR

PSYCH-101H Introduction to Psychology -

Honors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3.00

It appears to me that they are saying if you take BIOSCI-221 (regular Micro) and ENGL-101 (regular English Comp) you have to take PSYCH-101H (Honors Psychology) - I.E. you can't take PSYCH-101 (regular Psychology) unless you take ENGL-101H (Honors English Comp). Either way, it sounds like you have to take either Honors English or Honors Psychology in order to pair them up.

The Catalog entry for nursing students enrolled prior to Fall 2011 allows regular Micro, regular Psych, and regular English Comp as follows:

Plus eleven units from the following options:

BIOSCI-221 Introduction to Microbiology . . . . . . .5.0

PSYCH-101 Introduction to Psychology . . . . . . . .3.0

ENGL-101 English Composition . . . . . . . . . . . . .3.0

OR

ENGL-101H Honors English Composition . . . . . .4.0

Also, the Catalog states that nursing students enrolled prior to Fall 2011 have to take 6 units of the American Institutions and meet the Math graduation requirement in order to obtain their Associate of Science degree but doesn't mention these requirements for nursing students enrolled during and after Fall 2011.

If anyone is interested in taking a look at the Catalog, the information is on pages 197 and 198 of the web Catalog.

If anyone has already looked into these issues, please, please let me know!

Hello what is coc and where is it?

@quick248 COC is College of the Canyons, its in Santa Clarita, CA. @2Dawn I havent met with the COC counselors yet, since I took all my pre-reqs at AVC so I know i have to take extra classes, but im sure the counselors can help you with those questions, they are really nice there.

I am so freaken excited that school starts on the 23rd!!!! I still haven't finished my reading... I think I am just so freaked about once the rollercoster of information starts we will be riding it for 2 years that I am just trying to delay the start a bit. LOL! Excited.... scared.... butterflies..... vomit.... I am really having trouble telling the difference at this point. LOL!

@workingstudent2011- that's awesome! Have you gotten all your books and supplies yet? I'm having trouble figuring out our schedule, do you know more about it? I'm thinking of going to school next week to ask someone from the nursing department. Also do we start on the 27th?

Hey everyone! Congratulations on starting your nursing education! :yelclap: I graduated June 2011 from the program so I have walked in your shoes. Good luck and get ready for a busy two years.

Thank you Cocstudentnurse! Is there anything you reccommend to help us pass? Is it the information that is hard to comprehend or is it the amount of material that is needed, the harder part?

For me, it was the amount of material. You not only have a lot of classroom lecture material but there is a lot of clinical paperwork to keep up with as well that requires research. I found some classes easier than others. Stay ahead of the work if you can. Whatever you do, do NOT get behind, it's almost impossible to keep up once you do because of the amount of material.

Do invest in a weekly planner. Every Sunday, I would sit down and figure out how many hours per day that I had available to study and I would look at the reading/work list and split the work between the days. This worked really well for me and I was able to stay a week ahead of schedule most times.

In clinicals, take advantage of every single learning opportunity you can. If you aren't allowed to perform the skill yet, take the opportunity to watch and ask questions. This not only is a great learning opportunity for you, but also scores major points with your precepting nurses. I also recommend that when you pick your patients for clinical, try to choose ones that coincide with what you are learning in lecture. This is not always possible, but helps a heck of a lot with remembering lecture information. Be prepared for clinicals. Make sure you know everything you can about your patients before you show up on the floor. We usually went to the hospital the day before to pick our patients and do research on them to be prepared for our day. I'm not sure if they still do things that way or not.

Take advantage of the skills lab hours. The staff there are excellent and they are all registered nurses and are there to help you out. Sometimes they will watch you do a skill and give you tips to help you pass your practicums as well. Running through the skills with the nurses there helped me be less nervous when it came to practicum exam day.

Sorry this was so long. Let me know if there are any other questions along the way.

Thank you for the info. It is very much appreciated!

Hi @mbragasin! Today is 8/20 and I just got your message. Sorry. I just downloaded the schedules from Blackboard. I believe we do start next week, the 27th. Maybe the other class is starting on the 23rd? I haven't ordered the recommended books yet and need to do so now. Please keep us posted with any news. Thanks! :)
