Cedars-Sinai New Grad Summer 09

U.S.A. California

Hey everyone!

Just thought we could start a thread for those of us who interviewed for Cedars-Sinai's new grad program this past week.

Specializes in Telemetry, EKG interpretation, ICU/CCU.

and i was told that they're calling the people who got accepted.

Specializes in L&D, Antepartum, Mother-Baby.

I was also pretty shocked after I left my interview and opened my packet to see that the minimum gpa was 3.5. Nowhere before the packet did it say anything about that "qualification"; and it would have probably saved them A LOT of time if they had stated that during the original application process because it would have weeded out a lot of people like me.

I almost felt sick to my stomach when I found out. I had a great GPA that was definitely over 3.5 before nursing school, but between having to run and work a small business (20 hours a week)--which I had to do to survive--and have two kids, needless to say my GPA dropped. My GPA does not define me; I am a hard worker who is dedicated and determined.

I felt really great about my interview, and seemed to hit it off with my interviewer. I guess just like everyone else I will have to wait and hope for the best.

Good luck everyone!

and i was told that they're calling the people who got accepted.

If this is true then I'm starting to get nervous. I haven't heard anything from anyone. I guess I have to wait it out like everyone else.

I also want to mention that my interviewer told me that they're aiming for 80% of the new grads they hire to have a BSN.

I am kind of surprised about the 3.5 GPA. When I interviewed it was 3.0. I guess with 1700 people applying, they had to try and weed the field down some how.

When I asked the person interviewing me how important it was to have your BSN vs. ADN. She said it didn't make a difference. If they liked you, they liked you. However, she did say that studies have shown that BSN nurses are less likely to make a medication error then ADN/ASN nurses. I am not sure if I agree with that. But medication errors are a huge thing. So I can see why they would be concerned with it. For what it's worth, I have my ADN and I was hired by them. But I made it very well known during my interview that I have every intention of getting my BSN and soon as I am eligible for the program they offer at Cedars.

Good luck to all of you who interviewed. Cedars is a great place to work. You are incredibly lucky if you get the opportunity.

The way it worked during the last open house was that if you were accepted, they call you. Otherwise, they send you a letter saying you weren't selected.

I'd just like to also add that the whole GPA thing makes me sad. Different teachers at different schools grade their students in their own way. At my school, the teachers constantly pushed us and asked ridiculously tricky questions on tests... Then they told us "all you need is a C. just be glad you're moving on.... now get over it and have a nice summer"....literally. So it's hard to be judged on your gpa knowing that you studied and studied and you know your stuff.... it just looks like you don't because you didn't know the answers to questions that were often not even nursing-related. Our teachers pushed us and let us get lower grades in an attempt to light the fire under our butts so we could pass the NCLEX. They said straight from the beginning that their number one aim is to get a score of 100% for their NCLEX passing rate. It's just sad to be turned away from a lot of hospitals because you don't meet their GPA requirements...

Anyways, my interviewer said that i did a really good job and that she was impressed with me... and that she hopes that I get selected. But they're planning to look closely at everyone's grades. She did add in that grades aren't EVERYTHING... So I don't know if that really helps much lol...

My gpa isn't that great either so hopefully the other required paperworks have some weight on their selection. If anyone gets contacted or receives a letter, please leave a post here haha thanks!

Yes, I was pleased with my interview because the nurse manager seemed to love my answers (although she didnt do any scoring while I was there) and I thought I did a good job to make sure she knew about my clinical abilities. With that said, my heart dropped when I saw the 3.5 GPA when I got home because I'm nowhere near that due to personal situations that have occurred throughout the last 2 years that have contributed to my difficulty concentrating and focusing in the theory portion. So I hope that the GPA isn't so heavily considered because I KNOW my GPA does not define my passion in patient care. Piggybacking on the previous poster, let us know if you got a call or letter! =D

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but here goes...

I interviewed with them on June 9th. I called them this morning because I had something to ask them... The recruiter mentioned that the only information given to them by the nurse managers was that they would make their decision within 3 weeks, and at that time they would be either calling people or sending letters in the mail. I actually asked that question before I left the interview, and someone told me we would be notified within 1 to 1 1/2 weeks. I guess it's changed. Oh well. Hope that helps.

do you think the gpa they look at is from nursing school or an overall gpa? i had a bachelors degree before i went to nursing school, so when factoring in that gpa for a cumulative, it's lower than 3.5. if it's just nursing school, then i'm good. and btw, am i the only one who did not have a positive interview experience?

well... it said cumulative... but i know places like usc university hospital only consider the grades from the nursing program. so i think you'll be fine. why didn't you think you had a positive experience? i was really happy with my interview... but my gpa isn't quite up there... so i'm not expecting to get selected.

well...my interviewer couldn't have seemed more bored/tired/exhausted. it kind of made me feel like i was in her way. i don't know, maybe she took one look at my school (ADN program) and decided i wasn't worth her time but had to proceed with the questions. it made me feel pretty inadequate, but i still tried to deliver kick-ass answers. i keep hearing you guys talk about how nice and encouraging your interviewers were. so anyway, what are you guys going to do with the gift they gave us?
