Any National University of San Diego RN Alumni out there?

U.S.A. California

Hello! I'm currently taking the prereqs to apply to the nursing program and have done extensive research. There's one thing missing- feedback from alumni. I've scoured allnurses.com for alumni from National University of San Diego BSN prog but I haven't found had any luck :uhoh3:. If you are an alumni :nurse: please let me know how your experience went. Is there anything you wish someone told you before you began the BSN program? Is there anything you'd change? What was your favorite thing about NU? What was the most challenging and how did you overcome it? Please pass on your words of wisdom. Tips on TEAS, Essay, NCLEX... all feedback is welcome. Congrats on becoming an RN! :bowingpur

Hey ad-ace, I am moving to the SD area in April 2016, and am looking to possibly attend NU. I have read A LOT of bad stuff about the school. I'm currently attending a university in NC, and will have completed all my pre-reqs before I start at NU. NU is appealing to me because I will be 34 next year and need to obtain my degree so that I can start my career and help support my family when my husband retires from the Navy. Have you heard anything, recently, about NU's program? All the reviews that I have read are pretty dated.

Hey ReordonaSRN, I am transferring to the SD area in April 2016 and was looking into attending NU. I am currently attending a university in NC and will have finished my science courses before I start NU. I've read a lot of bad things about the program. However, I see that you have a lot of positive comments in regards to their program. Is there anything that you have heard recently about the program?

I am so happy I found this thread! I just finished all of my pre-reqs through NU and just applied for cohort SD49! I'm waiting to hear back on my date to take the TEAS. One of the biggest reasons I chose NU was I didn't have to wait to get into classes (which I had been doing at CC's). I'm also 27, have 3 kids, and a husband in the military. Life is busy, and this needs to be done. My experience with NU so far has been hit or miss, but I believe it's that way with any school. If you study, make school an actual priority, engage in classes you will do just fine. I had a couple professors who I felt just didn't give a darn but, that's with anything in life. I hope this thread continues to grow, and helps others looking into NU's program!

I just started the NU nursing program, I am in Cohort 48 in SD. I took a couple prerequisite classes at NU prior to applying so I had a good understanding of how fast paced the classes are. So far, everything seems to be going favorably, it seems as though there are plenty of faculty members that are willing to help struggling students. They want their nursing students to do well and pass the NCLEX. One thing that did take me by surprise was the unpredictability of class and lab dates and times. Obviously the entire cohort cannot be in the same class so they split the cohort into different classes at random. Some morning, some night, some Saturday classes thrown in here and there. You don't know what the class schedule is until about a month before it starts and you do get a two day grace period to request a schedule change but they recommend you find someone in your cohort that is willing to switch. If you are working (which I am) just be prepared to work with your employer.

As far as grades and the TEAS, I had a 3.9 GPA and took the TEAS once and got an 84. There were around 180 people that applied to cohort 48. I studied for around three weeks before the teas and I would definitely recommend purchasing the online ATI practice test. Hopefully I'll be back to report more good news about the program as it goes on! Good luck to you all!

@mrsecookie: did you get in to cohort 49? I found out Friday that I was accepted but I'm deferring to start in cohort 50.

@rheart: Please keep us posted on the program! I was accepted into cohort 49, but I'm deferring to start in cohort 50. I would love to hear how the experience is going for you! I don't work, so the class schedules will be no problem!

Hey Im a few years late I have a few questions . Did you go through the accelerated program at NU? MY husband is also in the military and I want to become a nurse . I have a BS in Healthcare Administration but I do not have the best GPA. When applying did you get a discount for being a spouse ? And when they calculate the GPA is it just the pre-reqs or undergrad?

Hey how's it going? I graduated from NU back 20 some cohorts ago lol... but I was in the cohort when they started to make changes in the program... we brought the pass rate from the 70 percentile to the 90 percentile... the program was great and gave me a chance to get a MSN from University of San Francisco and even got into their DNP FNP program... program is great but like anything you make out of it what it is... I currently work at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital Level 1 trauma and ABMC ED Charge Nurse... I chose to work up in the Bay Area because the nurses get paid pretty good...nurses up here make anywhere from 130k to 300k... obviously with OT... well good luck to all of you...

My husband is military as well. As far as I know, we don't get a discount. They calculate just the science GPA: A&P I & II, Microbiology, BioMed Stats...and I think there was another.

I want to apply for the BSN program in April, 2017 cohort 54. Thank you all for your advice and information! Because my husband is active duty and we are in SD for a limited time, NU seemed like the best option for me. Some of the comments scare me though. I'm hoping that, throughout the years since those comments, some of NU's ways have changed!

I like this thread and I have found that it has some valuable information for anyone looking to attend NU. I'm am awaiting the beginning of cohort 54 in April and I will post updated information regarding my thoughts as to how the program is and try to add some new information about the school for potential applicants. Take care everyone.
