Advice on New Grad Programs (CHOC, Hoag etc)

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi All,

So I'm graduating in June with my BSN and looking to come back down to SoCal to be near my family. I've applied to CHOC RN Residency Program, Hoag, Loma Linda and UCI. Does anyone have any advice on these hospitals and how competitive they are to get into? Also, about how long do you need to wait to hear from them, especially if the posts are still up? I've heard mixed advice on calling to get updates and letting know how interested you are. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Super competitive right now for everyone.

I believe Loma Linda will maybe hire 10...but they've been getting 1000 applicants and usually will hire their own graduates first.

I can't speak for all of them on numbers, but they have all cut how many new grads they hire and there are typically 100's of applicants for each spot right now. Do anything to your resume that you can to make yourself stick out.

don't limit yourself on the hospitals you apply to. apply to as many hospitals as you can even if it means driving an hour to work. there are a ton of hospitals in LA and Riverside counties besides Orange County. Also you need to get on the list to be able to apply to LA County "County" Hospitals e.g. LAC-USC, Harbor UCLA, Olive View, Rancho. as a new grad, it's going to competitive wherever you go, but at the big name hospitals, it'll be even worse. I'd also suggest checking out the VA Medical Center since they seem to be only taking BSN new grads now.

How do you get on the list to apply to county hospitals? You can still apply even if you're from out of state, right?

to get on the list, you need to do a civil interview at one of the LA County County Hospitals. This interview get's your name on the list and you your "Letter" from the county that says you are eligible to work at a LA County County Hospital.

First you apply to LADHS.org and select which county hospital you want to do your interview at. Then they review your application and either call or send you a letter to set up an interview.

After the interview, they will then send you a letter saying you are on the list for 1 year to be eligible to apply and work at the county hospitals.

I'd also suggest checking out the VA Medical Center since they seem to be only taking BSN new grads now.

Untrue. I am graduating with my ADN this December and have interviews @ VA in Long Beach and Los Angeles....perhaps my 6 years in the Air National Guard helped?

Untrue....I am graduating with my ADN in December and have 2 interiews @ VA in Long Beach and Los Angeles ....perhaps being in the Air National Guard helped but they said this carries more weight than a BSN

Yes it does. They take care of their own first. As it should be, in my opinion.
