Upswing in community college applications...

U.S.A. Arizona

Does anyone have an opinion on the impact of doing away with the CNA requirement on applications to the Maricopa CC system? I have heard that a lot of people are waiting for it to go away before applying - which may result in a large amount of applications in Spring 2006 (i.e.: more of a wait!). Opinions?

Keli,

You still may have a pretty good chance of getting in. I have a friend who also applied this summer. She put down 4 choices and was told by her advisor that her chances for spring were good. They're opening another partnership program in October so that may open some slots up. I'm bummed about CGCC. They were my 2nd choice for Spring although I have to say that I wasn't too crazy about it being at the Williamsfield campus.....MCC is still the best deal for me. I'm in Gilbert at Cooper and Guadelupe so it is literally a 10 minute ride from my house. Also, they have the onsite Children's Center that my son absolutely loves (the prices are really reasonable...I paid 35.00 a week this summer.)

As for taking FON and Patho, as far as I'm concerned the more information we can get, the better. I'm planning on going to ASU's RN-MSN program so I will

need those classes anyway.....

The one thing that is making me a little nervous is the paramedic to RN program they are starting this summer.....I'm afraid that that program will have so many applicants that it will make the waiting list even longer than it currently is.....

Wow Mary, I"m at Lindsay and RAy in Gilbert. In fact, my daughter goes to school right around the corner from you at Edu-Prize. The Wiliamsfield campus wasn't as close to me as CG, but it was a lot better than the alternatives. I haven't heard about the paramedic to RN program. I hope that it's completely a seperate program altogether or maybe we get first choice since we're already on the waiting list. Thanks for the vote of confidence on getting in in the spring, what is your friends date/time stamp if you don't mind me asking?

I too plan on getting my BSN so I'm not too bummed about having to take patho and FON. Also, the more info we know the better RN's we'll be. I just wish it had been incoorporated, maybe it would've saved me some $$.

Hi Keli,

We're practically neighbors! My son goes to Oak Tree Elementary which is near EduPrize...

I think my friends timestamp was around 08:01:50......her number wasn't low so she was surprised by the advisors comment...but she did put 4 choices down.

Here is the link for the paramedic to RN program:

These students will bypass Blocks 1 and 2 and go straight to Block 3.......

My biggest concern is that there won't be enough clinical rotations to go around.........

Have you checked out MCC and their Children's Center? That may be an option for you....I wish more schools would offer clinicals on the weekends.....

I think that would solve some of the problems of there not being enough clinical rotations as well as a lot of daycare issues for us moms!

I'm taking the CNA this fall so that I can get my application in this October. They say the wait is going to get even longer with all the people who are not doing the CNA course - so I figured I should get my application in ASAP.

I finished my CNA class about a month ago and passed the CNA yesterday ( ). I'm not surprised about the dropping of the CNA req. When I met with a nursing advisor and she told me I needed the class (at the end of this April 2005) the summer AND the fall classes were completely filled at EVERY college campus. I would have had to wait almost a year to become certified, and THEN be placed on the waiting list for the RN program. I think that it pushes people back too far. In most other states, block I of nursing school is the CNA, block II the LPN, etc. To make us dish out an extra $1000 (which is what most of us paid) to learn these skills is asking a bit much.

As far as Patho and Nutrition is concerned, I think that they are extremely important classes to have. Hopefully - if they are dropped as co-reqs - the necessary information can be integrated into the program. Maybe it will be taught from a nursing point of view (pathophysiology and nutrition requirements of the pediatric diabetic inpatient as opposed to the requirements of the general public) instead of info that isn't needed. I think that as long as there is such a shortage of nurses the educational reqs of these programs will become smaller and smaller. Although it doesn't do much for those of us that will continue with our medical education, people that want to hurry and get into the field will do well.

Sorry for the long post, folks. Good luck with the applications!!! :)

I also have put my application into the pool. I have a number (119) for the summer application round. The only statement I get from admissions is "one to two semester wait". I wonder if she realizes that could mean a YEAR. It's frustrating to get ready to go and then have to wait.

I really enjoyed the CNA class (took it in June at MCC...didn't pay $850+). However, I can see why they would incorporate it into the nursing curriculum. What I want to know is what are they dropping from the curriculum in order to accomodate the CNA material? Remember, there's only so much time to cover everything. I'm guessing they're streamlining the stuff and will give a broad brush overview. That thought is scary when it comes to Patho and Nutrition stuff! I really enjoyed the Nutrition class and with Americans becoming fatter and fatter, you'd think we'd put a lot of emphasis on the subject.
