summer externships?

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello,

I was wondering what my chances of getting a summer internship in the Phoenix area (Tempe, Scottsdale, etc). My boyfriend is being transferred for his job and we don't want to be apart for that long so I'm trying to look around. It seems like some of the hospitals offer these but I'm wondering how easy they are to get. I have one year left of school (2 semsesters) in Milwaukee. Thanks. Any info is appreciated!

The hospitals usually post externships in December and May. Banner hires externs after they have completed two semesters of nursing school and Catholic Healthcare West hires externs after one semester of nursing school. Check out their websites (bannerhealth.com, chwhealth.org) for openings.....

Thanks! I'm going to start applying to all of them and hope I can get one of them! I'll probably go out in March and visit the hospitals. I spoke with a lady at Banner yesterday. Is any one hospital better than another? Thanks for the help...I don't know the area at all so any info is appreciated. Happy Holidays everyone!

Which part of the city will your boyfriend by working in? That will limit where you wish to apply in the first place. No sense in having to commute for 90 minutes daily each way...............if you can be more specific as to actual area, then it will be easier to make a suggestion to you that will be beneficial.

Example: Scottsdale is over 120 square miles in size..........and that is just Scottsdale.

He will be in Tempe, so I'm going to look in that area first. If I can't find anything then I will broaden my search. We won't be living together so I don't HAVE to be in Tempe but I would prefer to be close. I figure as long as I'm in the vicinity, it is still closer than me living in Wisconsin:)

Are the odds good that I will be able to find a hospital to hire me for the summer? I hope so...

If you're in Tempe, Banner Desert may be the closest. Banner Baywood is another 6-7 mles east of Banner Desert. Chandler Regional is also pretty close and they hire a lot of externs over the summer.....Banner will make you fill out a supplemental application that will require a recommendation from a clinical you can download it here.....Extern Program

When I was hired for Chandler last summer I just needed a letter of recommendation from an instructor and a copy of my skills checklist. The interview was about an hour and the questions were pretty similar to the questions that Banner asks on its supplemental application. The way that Chandler runs theirs program is that you work full time during the summer (3 12's) and then you have to work at least 12 hours every two weeks while you are in school. They are pretty flexible with their scheduling.

I've heard different things about the Banner hospitals. Some departments will only let you work 24 hours a month and some will let you work more. Your best bet would be to check with the individual hospital. I also recommend that you call one their recruiters, they are very helpful.....The number for crecruitment is posted on the job search section of their website.....

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone!

I am going to apply to Banner, Chandler, and probably even Scottsdale and see what happens!

Does anyone know about how much these externships pay? Does it ever help to have a CNA? It doesn't say on the sites but I know it helps in WI. Seems the need for RNs is much greater in AZ though.

Thanks again!

I've been looking for summer CNA programs in AZ with no luck. They all seem to be a semester long starting in the Fall. I'd ultimately like to work for Mercy Gilbert, as it's the closest to my home in Queen Creek. Let me know if anyone has any info!

Thanks! Jeremy

Desert, Chandler, Scottsdale would be good. Also check out the externships at St. Joes in Phx. It's ~15 miles from Tempe and they do offer many extern positions during the year.

I'm not sure on the pay though, check with their HR departments at each facility.
