Free CNA training still available?

So now that a lot my friends/family members have lost their jobs or been cut back so much that what I had recommended to them so long before, (nursing) and they so quickly rejected is now more appealing. Of course they need a job now, so my question is this: Does any of you know where a person can train as they work to become a CNA? I remember when I first started years ago that practically every facility had some form of CNA training, now it seems no one does! :eek: Any tips or help would be appreciated, the last thing is my house turning into a halfway house for my down and out family/friends....

Becoming a CNA definitely wont be a fix all. I am currently in a CNA class and there are several people in there who are struggling to find a CNA job. I have not heard of a free program. There are several schools that offer this Gateway, CAC, RSAA, MCC, EVIT each has a varying cost with the community college program being longer and cheaper.

There arent any free classes that i know of. But if you go thru your local WIA office or jobsight/unemployment office they do offer programs that can get you help for the classes. That is what i did. So far they have helped me completely with my books, class tuition, and scrubs. CNA isnt a fix all, but its a start to a better life/career, im bridging over to LPN only because the tech school im goin to is hard to get into the RN program. Good Luck in whatever you decide.

Hi! WIA stands for Workforce Investment Act. Here is the link to Arizona's WIA website: http://www.azdes.gov/wia/

WIA will help pay for vocational rehabilitation and training if you lose your job. I agree with the others, nothing is free, but WIA can help tremendously. I'm very tired or I would explain better, LOL. The website should have plenty of info on WIA. Good luck!! :nurse:

That isn't the same in all areas. I went to the unemployment office here on the Oregon coast and got nothing from them...not even a lead as to where I could take a CNA training class.

In fact, the only place here on the coast that offers the training...keeps postponing it month after month. My only other options are to drive 2 hrs to Portland everyday for a month and pay $1000 for training....it is just insane.

If the government really wants to correct the so called Nursing shortage...they really need to find a way to make it possible for people to actually get the training and schooling needed.

hi trying_to_do_right, i actually found a place on one of the forums here for az for a cna training program called providence training institute in phoenix. i called them yesterday & the lady was sooo nice & helpful. the woman told me that the reason a lot of facilities like nursing homes don't offer cna training anymore is because of the turn-over rate & the liability issue. there are different kinds of financial aid programs they can try to put you in depending on your age group. i qualified for one for 17-21 yr olds so my training will be free. i don't know what the other benefits are for other ages but i would def. call & talk to them! they will even help you locate a job & the training is only 5 weeks! i highly recommend them! they are very nice! i hope this helps & good luck!! :wink2:

Another Phoenix area CNA school to consider is Star Canyon School of Nursing at 8900 N. Central Ave, Suite 104A (just South of Dunlap). Their phone number is 602-943-1337. A member of my church got his training there and recommended it to me. I was there yesterday with a young friend who wants to become a CNA. It is a small no-frills place, cost is $895.
