I have been going pretty regular to a LTC facility only 20 minutes from my house. M-F, 7-3, perfect for my situation. Until today. I was doing trach care on a man, 65 years old, COMPLETELY A & O x 3. Have been working with him for weeks, no problems. He proceeds to grab me between my legs. Thought at first he was disoriented or something, moved his hand away, very calm, said NO. He did it again at that time really hurt me. Then tried to pull me in the bed while saying "Please" and touching himself. I calmly got myself out of there. Told the supervisor whose reply was "He must have thought you were hot, and laughed". Then told me just to make a note in his chart. Not happy with that, I asked another nurse who told me he does stuff like that all the time, and has hit some nurses. I stress again, he's completely oriented. I've been in LTC 12 years, and have had plenty of patients make inappropriate comments or touch me inappropriately, but 9 times out of 10, they're confused or demented. The other times it was like a pat on the butt or something easier to deal with. I wrote it up and put it under the social worker's door. Will find out what if anything was done tomorrow. I was upset for hours, am just now calming down. I don't know what was worse, the action, or the reaction of the building. What would you have done??????

I think in first case you should have speak to him roughly and let him know that his behaviour is wrong it is not accepted and will not be tolerated anymore .The rest of the staff present, should also rally with you.

He probably touched the supervisor before and she loved it .

I would by-pass her and get the next in-line ,i will not rest until the then patient and supervisor appologise in writting.

I had worked in our lone mental health hospital as a student nurse and witness a patient accidentally stepped backwards and touch the then Senior Nursing Officer ,she retaliated by physically boxing /punched that patient several times even though he said sorry,in the presence of all the student nurses.

we witness female staff nurses boxing out patients front teeth for touching them in appropriately.

Doctors are discharging patients for disrespecting our female staff on the ward.We need to suport each other in times like these ,remember it is some body wife ,it can happen to you ,so don,t laugh or make fun with these behaviour .we are here to give nursing care not to perform prostitution.

LET THE SUPERVISOR APPOLOGISE TO YOU.That patient will need psychiatric evaluation ,check out his past.He may have potential to commit a sexual offense .He should be kept away from the other female patients, and restrict children from visiting him unsupervised.

Go to the Administrator's office. This is very important because it must be reported immediately. From there, anyone could have been assaulted or even raped. He may need to go for Psych care.

I'm really shocked that this happened to you and it gives me a queazy feeling. Don't let people "blame the victim." Report this to someone that won't make fun of it or wise-a__ remarks. This is violation of you and I find it horrific that administration hasn't dealt with him.

I agree with calling the police, it was a sexual assault.

If he was alert and oriented, then I see no reason why you should have to just swallow this.

He knew what he was doing, but he thinks he can get away with it.

I would have called the cops.

Just because you are a nurse doesn't mean you have to put up with that.

Of course he probably would have tried to flip it on you, but that's still no reason not to report it.

If you were at a bar and a guy grabbed you would you have put up with it?

OK, forget telling him it was wrong. If he's Ox3, he KNOWS it's wrong. You were sexually assaulted!!! File a police report. They probably won't have enough to charge him, but maybe the jerk and administration will wake up. I never understand why we nurses let pts do this. Tell administration you will not ever accept this man as a pt again - if they complain, mention a lawsuit.

Be mad, It's alright. You should be mad. You were violated. Get counseling if you need to.

Document EVERYTHING! The times, dates, events that happened, comments made to you, and by whom. You will possibly need these things when you go to anyone outside of your facility- the police, a lawyer, etc. Any supervisor who brushed your concerns away, and added insult to injury with "your hot" remarks, or whatever, should go down the drain with the pt for sexual harrassment.
