Licensure requirements for CA for foreign grad

World Immigration

Published

I just graduated from a nursing school in the phils. I wasn't able to take the local board bec. my immigrant visa was about to expire.I was lucky that i was able to finish my course there. My question is do you really have to be a local board passer so you will be eligible to take the CA NCLEX here?I mean even as an immigrant? And for all those foreign grads how long did it take for your application for licensure to be processed?:uhoh3: just wondering....

Many states are going back to requiring the local license and to get it waived you must have a valid reason; such as being an American citizen so do not qualify to even have a chance at writing the NLE. But just not wishing to take it is not going to be valid much longer. The exam was actually required for years, until the CGFNS exam stopped being required in all states. We do not expect the CGFNS exam to be required again, but the local license, yes. Especially with the number of graduates coming out of some of the countries now, as well as two years of experience, and most other countries require the local license before they will grant a visa.

How about those who are US immigrants who took their BSN in the philippines?? And those immigrants waiting for their citizenship? :o Do we need to take the local board??

Lawrence has already answered your question in another thread.

hello. just a question... if you're going to take the CA-NCLEX exam this January and you don't have an SSN, can you inquire your results online? or do you have to wait for the letter from the BON? Thanks to all who will reply... :-)

This has been answered many times but No you will not get results online but will have to wait for a letter which can take anything from 4-6 weeks .

We do not recommend Ca for initial licensure as they will not issue a license without SSN and after 3 years if you haven't provided one will destroy your file. Saying this a few have recently posted that they was able to get a 1 year extension. With current retrogression issues you are looking at approx 5 years plus before looking at obtaining a visa to work in the US. Much has been written and suggest a really good read on here

Regardless on which BON you apply to you are looking on a wait over over 3 months before you receive eligibility. If you want to move BON then that is up to you but you will have to restart all over again and meet that BON's requirements ie CES etc. I would suggest you wait for Ca seeing as you have already applied there.

Also typing all in capitals is classed as shouting.

I have gone ahead and edited the title of this entire thread since it is impossible to apply for the NCLEX exam directly in any state. Applications are for licensure only and the NCLEX is just one step in the process.

Hopefully others will see what they are actually applying for.

And since we are still seeing many that are going thru CA for initial licensure and then finding out that there were issues with doing it that way, will post again the reasons not to do that:

1. No license issued without a SSN#.

2. Letter to tell you that you passed gets sent by snail mail, expect to wait 4 weeks or longer to get results.

3. No way you will see your name on the website for the BRN.

4. You will not be considered a licensed US RN since no license will have been issued.

And now for the most important reason:

The passing letter and the rest of your file is only valid for three years from when that letter is sent out. If you do not have a SSN# by then, your file will be destroyed. Expected wait time now to get a green card/approval to legally work in the US is about five years. There just are no visas available, and the only way to get a SSN# is to have a visa that will permit you to work here.

Your choice as to what to do.

i sent my application nov 23 '07.. still gonna wait for it.. but i think im going to send my authenticated license to the CA BON.. recent news is that they're requiring it..

You are still missing the main point that we are making, it is going to be five years at the earliest before you will have a chance at a green card, and the letter that you passed is only valid for three years.

You will not be considered a US RN as you will not have a license number issued to you and also cannot use the endorsement for another state.

Best of luck to you.

thank you suzanne but im not missing the main point, and im just waiting for my time to sit and take the test.

And what about getting the visa so that you can use the license? That is what we are trying to explain to many of you here. The piece of paper has only three years for it to remain valid, much shorter than the expected time to have a chance at a visa.

Your choice but you are only making more work for yourself and spending much more money to get licensed in another state afterwards, then go thru the endorsement process back to CA. This is what we have been trying to explain to everyone here.

You also will be waiting more than a month to get your results, just want to make sure that you are completely aware of this. And your test results go bye-bye in three years.

i know what you mean and thank you so much for all these information, my relatives are doing what they can in the states. i am aware of the years that will pass by, thats why im making sure of every move i make. thanks again.

i am not by the way trying to apply in any other state. i havent even received my eligibility yet. let's take these steps one at a time.
