i'm planning to pay the assessment fee and submit all the required documents for assessment in ontario this month (december). however, i am planning to take ielts on January or February of next year. will that affect/delay my assessment duration or only the general registration process? coz if not having an ielts result would only delay the assessment alone, i might as well pay the fee and start the process after i take ielts? I am leaving for Canada in April 2011.

any advice? it would be appreciated. thank you!

Most provinces will not even begin to look at your file until all the necessary documentation is included. So that means your IELTS score has to be in the collection or it will just sit. You may certainly begin the process for registration, but be ready for CNO to wait until all the information required for the assessment has been received. The more I think about this process the more I recognize the gargantuan task it is to administer it. Thousands of open files waiting for that last piece of paper before they can move on to the registrar... wow! Imagine how difficult it must be even just to store it all, never mind keep them in some sort of order. I'm glad it's not my job!!

You should do IELTS prior application because of minimum score requirements.

oh. thank you!

I guess I should take and pass IELTS as soon as possible.

yeah, now that you mentioned it, I wouldn't want to go thru all that work only to let it sit like all the others. I might s well make it worth their time, andnott have to let my papers just sit there waiting for another one.

thanks again. :)

IELTS has to be less than 2 years old I believe for the college of RN but if the requirements have changed then old IELTS will not be accepted

Also to add you will not get eligibility to sit CRNE until your file is complete and accepted (met requirements) so no IELTS results means file not complete. As mentioned in post 13 by janfrn

Your question is very difficult to understand. I think what you're asking is how long do you have between taking the IELTS and making your application for registration in Canada - which includes writing the CRNE - and how long it will take for the college of nursing to approve your application. Am I correct?

First of all, you are not applying to write the CRNE when you apply to become an RN in Canada. You are applying for registration in the province of your choice. You cannot just write the exam. You are given permission to write it once your application for registration has been approved. And while the CRNE is a national exam and one only needs to pass it once to be registered anywhere in Canada, each province has its own criteria for registration that while similar for the most part, can be more restrictive in some provinces. The fact that one province has approved an application does not automatically mean the other provinces will do the same. There are significant costs associated with the application process and it's important to choose the province where you actually intend to live and work and not the province that is most likely to look favourably on your application. If one decides to apply to a province where they do not plan to live and work, they will have to go through the entire assessment process again in the new province, and despite having passed the CRNE in the first province, may still not meet the requirements for registration in he second province. Are you following me?

Your IELTS results must be no older than 2 years from the date of taking the exam until you apply for registration in Canada and if, during the course of your application being assessed, two years has passed since you took the exam, you may need to retest. Results of this testing must be forwarded to the College directly by the testing agency. Using British Columbia as an example, as of July 1, 2011, only the CELBAN and IELTS Academic are acceptable. A minimum score of 6.5 with a spoken score of at least 7 and no score lower than 6 is required for IELTS. BC requires a photocopy of your results AND the official copy directly from the testing centre before they will assess your application. https://www.crnbc.ca/Registration/RNApplication/InternationalEN/Documents/501.pdf

As for how long assessment of eligibility takes, there is no typical time frame. The application will not even be looked at until ALL documentation has been received: the completed application and fee, documentation of education - received directly from the school of nursing, documentation of registration in the country where the nurse was educated - received directly from the licensing body, documentation of registration in all other jurisdictions where the nurse has been registered and has worked - received directly from those jurisdictions, employment related documentation - received directly from those employers, criminal records check and child abuse registry check, proof of English fluency as already discussed and proof of identity. Delay associated with assessment is usually caused by a missing piece of documentation, a matter over which the college has no control. The process may take weeks or it may take many months. And before anyone starts complaining about that, remember that the process is in place to ensure that ALL nurses registered in Canada meet a minimum standard of eduction and competence and the only way to ensure that is to critically examine all the evidence.

Hello everybody ,

I am really confused about CNO english requirements. In their website its mentioned that u need to have 6.5 in rest and 7 in speaking. Does it mean a candidate with a 6 in reading is not applicable, as in other blogs and by very reputed canadian nursing professional i have read that all they focus on writing and speaking. so one must have 6.5 in writing and 7 in speaking.

I am really confused what to do. Is it possible to send CNO my two IELTS score cards differently.

One more thing i have got the application package with me, its nowhere written in the package that we need to send ielts score at this stage, they have just mentioned about the completed forms and fees plus the transcripts from the nursing college.

So is dat mean we can get the eligibilty to write CRNE w/o ielts score and probably we have to send them after passing the exam

Ielts scores are directly send to the Regulatory Body.

Your application won`t be assessed without language

testing scores.

6.5 means that your achieved average score in the Reading, Writing

and Listening Module has to be either 6.5 or higher.

Speaking Module 7 or higher!

In BC the language testing requirements were updated.

They are focussing on every part of the Module or do you think

that effective communication is possible without listening and

reading skills?

Prepare for IELTS and try to acheive the requested scores!

Thanks MOna 77 for the reply.

If u dont mind are u registered wid CNO too. Because one of my friend who recently got registered with CNO told me dat CNO asked her about the submission of the ielts score ater very long.

Other than ielts score I can submit my Toeic scores too, but don't they accept Two ielts score.

The first step with the CNO is to have your education assessed, the CNO has a high volume of international applicants and it often takes over a year, just to assess an applicant's education (requirement #1). The CNO does not want IELTS submitted at the beginning of the application process because the IELTS results are only good for two years and they will likely expire, before an applicant has completed all 7 requirements for registration in Ontario.
