Locum positions for new grads

I've been working a year in the only place I could find: hospice/palliative admissions evaluations. The local job market is very rough. I've been talking to recruiters when things have been bad and contemplating moving/travel though I'd like to avoid it. They told me something interesting, apparently new grads are turning to locum as a way to transition to a first permanent job. That seems crazy to me, but I have gotten interviews and offers I wasn't qualified for that way. Any thoughts on this? Why would facilities be willing to hire untrained temp new grads? Sheer desperation? Anyone have experiences actually doing this without mentoring or training?

Bumping. I'm curious as well. Currently a travel nurse and applying to NP programs now.

Color me curious as well-my guess would be that certain areas, maybe rural in particular, are certainly desperate for employees. Maybe they figure they can train their new grads, offer them a descent package, and sway them to stay. I've considered doing traveling RN after I graduate. I start my 15 month ABSN program in a few weeks and from what I've read on AN, the job market looks scarce for new grads. Maybe locum will be my ticket. I'm not even a nursing student yet so I'm just guessing, I hope you find get some info on this, I appreciate the thread.

Phosphorus,

I have been an NP for about 7 months now and I got a local tenens job and I love it, as well as the pay. I also love the flexibility. Yes, they train, but you have to learn quickly. I have been offered several full-time positions, as well and the contracts can last as long as you want. There is never a shortage and the hours are as many or as few as you want. Inbox me or email me at [email protected] for more info.

I'll be looking into jobs soon. Would you mind if I contact you in the near future as well?? :D
