12 hours is a long time! What's the longest you stayed away from a bathroom break? Personally, I think everyone should take a bathroom break. A good 10-minute break can do everyone some good. What do you think? :D

Y'all that do this are going to be peeing on your way to the bathroom like the LOL's we all take care of!!!

:)Exactly what I was thinking.

Twelve hrs no BR break was nothing. Now it's down to two hrs and I better go, or it won't matter.

I'm pretending I don't see the Depends on the horizon.

When I started I felt so overwhelmed by the amount of things I needed to get done in the next eight and a half hours that I didn't drink anything, eat anything pee or sit down for the whole shift (which ran over for at least the first four months). I even called home to say good-night to my kids while charting- yeah, that was a focused conversation. Since then I've realized that the five minutes it takes me to pee, allowing me to maintain a safe level of hydration, doesn't mean my residents are uncared for and/or dying. I also just realized recently that I don't get paid for a half hour break of shift whether I take it or not (Guess I should have checked my pay stubs more carefully!). I don't think it's a "poor me" thing or anything. For me it was finding some perspective about my priorities.

My work actually tried to enforce no peeing unless you are on on break lol. Sorry but I'm going to use the bathroom when I need it.

Does someone not understand the concept of self-care?

Yep, 16 hours is my record in the ER, no food but we did have water at a spot (just outside the ER technicaly but still within the room). I did not drink a whole lot or I would have had to dance those last 4 or so hours. Ive had a few 12s go by without a break before (our shifts are mostly 12s in the ER).

The bad thing was I wasnt expecting the 16, was supposed to be a 12 but had someone call in and they needed someone there (they actualy probably needed a few somones that day lol).

Getting paid to take a poop is never a bad thing

Haha, yep!

It's easy to do 8 hours without weeing especially if you work on a warm ward. You just have to be careful you don't get too dehydrated or you pay for it when you finish your shift.

This was my baseline before I was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus. In high school, I'd pee before I left the house and then not again until I came home. During sports seasons that might have been 8-9pm if I had an away game. My bladder was built for nursing. It's also how I knew something was seriously wrong when I started with the polyuria/polydipsia.

Actually, I remember the first time I had to do a 24 hour urine collection. I was at a doctor's appointment after school (probably 3-4PM) and the nurse was explaining to my mom and me how to do it. After she explained that you discard your first void of the day and then start with the next one, she said something like "so you can't possibly do it today." And my mom said "I'm sure she hasn't peed since the first time she went this morning." And I hadn't.

So the patients can pee anytime (and anywhere) they want to, but we can't take a bathroom break?
