2 yrs for pre-reqs? Does that sound right?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'll be starting my pre-reqs in the fall...yay! And you all have been very helpful here..so thank you!

I want to spread out my sciences and really understand the course, so I've decided to (or will try to), take 1 science course per semester starting in the spring. I'll try and get all the other core ones out of the way, so I can focus on the sciences. I have to take Anat, Phys (seperately) and micro.

But with that being done, it will take me exactly 2 yrs to get the pre-reqs done, then apply for the program which, if I'm accepted, will start the following semester.

Does this all sound alright? I was hoping to start as soon as possible, but at the same time I want to understand what I'm learning.

I've also decided to NOT take any science courses in the summer...I'll finish some core classes there.

Opinions??

Thanks a lot!

It took me a year and a half (including summer) to do my pre-req's. I also took A&P II with NSG 101 and Micro with NSG 203...don't do that. It was crappy. :lol2: I passed, but it was still crappy, especially the micro...UGH!

Thanks for sharing your schedules....

They also told me I didn't "need" some courses before the program, like pshychology and speech...but I'm getting those out of the way with everything else...then focus on the sciences, since they look at the science GPA seperately.

Ok..so I can assume 1 1/2-2yrs...

Can anyone recommend courses to take in the summer? Anything besides sciences huh? I was thinking pshychology, reading or maybe english?

Hi Sammygrll!!!!!!!!! That is what I did and yes, it took me a long time to finish but I currently have a 3.9 GPA to show for it and because of the high GPA, I have an excellent chance of getting into my school of choice on the first try. It's totally worth it.

What I did is I took all of the sciences seperately. With the easier ones such as Chemistry and Intro Biology, I took other prereqs such as phsychology (2 classes), philosopy (ethics), and a basic math course so I was done with all of my non science prereq's by the time I got to A&P. It took me three semesters to do my harder sciences such as A&P and Micro but I took those classes one at a time and was able to really focus my attention on those.

Now I'm working on my BSN prereqs and don't have that luxury so I'm taking Pathophysiology II with a basic statistics course this semester and next semester I'll be taking Patho I with a more advance Statistics course and maybe a Spanish class or some other elective I need (full time).

Let me clarify something too. I petitioned for the ADN program and have been accepted for a May 2009 start but because the wait is so long, I'm focusing now on my BSN hopefully with a Fall 2008 start.

That sounds exactly what I'm going to do! Except, I'll be going for my Assoc. for now...who knows what could happen later though!

My first semester, this fall...I'll also be getting a lot of classes out of the way, like math, reading, etc. Then I can focus on sciences as well, one per semester...with electives too.

Thanks a lot!

I started my pre-reqs Jun 05, by the time the program started August 06 I had completed all pre-req's and all but 1 general education requirement, granted I'm in an ADN program so they only require A&P I, English I, Psych & Dosage/Calculations to apply, but I had Nutrition, A&P II, & Micro (taken same semester A in A&P & a B in Micro so it isn't completely impossible lol) completed when I was accepted so to fill in those spaces to maintain full time I had to add in chem I, Statistics & Sociology which will apply later on for my BSN and am hoping to CLEP human growth & development, what exactly are the pre-req's you have to have done? you might only be required to have them completed by the semester prior to starting, several people in my class were finishing the 4 pre-req's when they applied.

The pre-reqs that I HAVE to do before applying are....

algebra, english, reading, computer prof, anatomy, phys. and mico.

These classes I don't HAVE to do before..but if done, I will get "extra points", so I'm doing them...lol

Physchology, Socio, humanities and speech.

On top of that I plan on taking a medical terminology class and some others to brush up on.

I know how I learn..lol and I know that 2 sciences per semester, or 1 in the summer would be brutal to me. So therefore I'll sacrifice another semester of applying, and get good grades first. But do you still think this can all be done in less than 2yrs?

Fall semester I have.... reading, humanities, socio, math and speech...

Just out of curiosity, why are you taking two of the extra classes rather than required or do they conflict with other class times? I'd hit up the sciences with speech & reading as those may be easier with a science course, if you did english, A&P, and computer fall semester, then winter reading, Micro & algebra you'd have the summer to complete the extra classes which to me are the easier classes so they are more doable in a summer term, if you are enrolled in them at the time of application, then they may still count them since they will be completed prior to begining the program

Oh I tried to get the sciences....i did..really...lol

But it's FULL, and about 90ppl on the waitlists!! I asked my counselor about that, and she said that it's based on senority...or first come forst served. So if you're stuck on the waitlist, you just wait...till the following semester. So she advised me to get other classes out of the way,and then when I earn more credits, I'll have more priority in picking classes, like before the new students...which is what I am now....

So that's the plan!

oh yick waitlists, soooo glad none of my classes were ever full when I needed them, managed to get lucky and be one of 24 out of 70 getting in last year lol we actually planned financially to be broke an extra year just in case it took me 2 applications to get in since the program is so small it only starts once a year
