Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

It seems as though many people who enter nursing want to enter the ER or the Labor and Delivery unit because of the "cute babies." So I ask this question: what would you like to specialize in once you are a nurse?

I am in interested in the NICU and pediatrics. I also wouldn't mind labor and delivery.

My dream/goal at this point is to be a CRNFA. When I originally deceided to go back to school I enrolled in a surgical tech program because I wanted to work in the OR. I did my research and deceided getting an RN opens up so many more doors. So now im in NS and hoping to eventually end up in CRNFA school.

I'm actually very interested both of the above mentioned but I also have always been very interested in pysch. so I'm sure I'll have a better idea once I'm very (hopefully) in nursing school.

What's is a CRNFA?

Registered Nurse First Assistant. I put the C on accident as I was reading about CRNA while I was typing.

This is an older post of what KimGau is talking about. You have to have a BSN and then attend a RNFA program in order to become a CRNFA.

I'm actually surprised by all the interest in L&D. I'm the only one that I know who seems to want to do that, and I'm definetely the only one who wants to do postpartum. For those interested in L&D though, just remember most people don't consider a baby cute covered in fluid, mucous and blood ;)

For me personally, I like the slow paced which is why I said specifically Postpartum but I'd also be interesting possibly in pediatric psych or Rehab (the physical therapy kind of rehab).

Specializes in Future: Forensic/Legal Nurse Consulting.

Babies are cute even if they're covered in blood, I've had two. The reason I would want to work on labor and delivery is that when I had my sons those were both the best moments in my life and i would love to be able to be a part of someone elses. There is nothing better in the world then the first time you meet your child, I don't think I'm having anymore but I would love to see others experience it.

i want to become a CRNA, so I want o work ER/ICU but I would also love to spend time in labor/delivery but for the mothers not the babies.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

A heads-up: about 75% of you will end up changing your mind about your specialty--and change it several times--during school. That's because you're going to get exposed to many different areas in school, and areas that you had never considered before might be the ones you find interesting once you experience them.

That doesn't mean you should go into school no preferences--of course, keep your preferences and pursue them! Just don't be surprised if, at graduation, you find yourself wanting to specialize in a different area than the one you thought about before school started :)

Oncology/Hematology

Though since I've started volunteering in the ER, that sounds exciting too.

I also would like to one day work in Hospice.

I'm also interested in working at Shriner's Burn Hospital for Children. An absolutely amazing place and beyond fascinating.

I'm open to many areas, but these are the areas that I really would like to work in at some point in my life before I die.

Where I do NOT want to be is at an LTC, or geriatrics. Just not my thing.
