It's about time for a new thread to breathe life into this tired forum.....
Here we go!
You know you're a male RN when:
- You constantly complain to coworkers that your scrubs are too short, (since when is 33 long a "tall"?) and you have no boobs to fill your unisex scrub top.
- You get offended glances as you eat your cheeseburger and fries at lunch from your coworkers who are on the "lean cuisine" diet...
-People assume you, having a pair, possess the superhuman strength to lift the 350lb lady in someone else's room, regardless of the fact that several of your female coworkers look tough enough to whup yer @$$...
-Your credentials should read: RN-NWP (registered nurse, nurse with prostate)
-Your PMS detection skills are at an all-time high along with your avoidance maneuver techniques...
-You feel like you're either married to, or being a daddy to everyone else in your unit....
Keep 'em coming!
got one female patient with Spinal Cord injury Young and Beautiful....poor lady...well anyways she needs to get catheterized Q4H....the F Nurse assigned to her was so busy that time...so she ask me a favor to do it....but i heard from other Nurses that this patient was so picky and so demanding that no one would like to be assigned in that Station...
Then i entered her room...but upon seeing me....huuuu i got surprised that she never complain at all...why a Male nurse will do the procedure....from then on...she will always ask that i be the one to do it!! But Hey.....i was so careful...you know guys what i mean.....
When she started showing some interest in me....then i never do the cath anymore....
Patients refer to the female nurses as 'nurse' and they call you by your first name.
When the female nurses say how comfortable they feel with you in the room and not with the male techs (it becomes even more embarasing when such statements are made right in fromt of the male techs and the snickers that burst out of them).
When the attending bursts out on you for things not going his way, despite female nurses also being present in the same procedure.
when you tell people that you are a nurse and they reaffirm by saying 'oh so ure a 'male nurse'
when ure asked the same age old frustrating question, why did you take up nursing? you should have been a doctor...
this fits because I don't think it happens too often with female nurses, but with surprising regularity with me:you enter a patient's room for the first time, stethescope around your neck or otherwise holding some type of device/equipment or a chart, and before you can introduce yourself, they greet you "hello doctor".
LOL, I'm an EKG tech (pre-nursing student) and I even get that sometimes. I think when people just see a guy in scrubs at a hospital, some people anyway - they just automatically assume it's a doctor unless informed otherwise.
This is my first post on this forum....
1. When I have my very own restroom at night on my unit - Public Men's room ( I work nights)
2. When I get blamed for leaving the toilet seat up even when I don't use the employee's restroom (see No 1) :angryfire
3.When I get a female patient from a different race demanding I get a female nurse to "change" her mother.
4.When I get a backslap and the ladies get a curt "Good Morning Ladies" from the Male Attendings.
You know your a male RN. When the male physician ask about the patient and you don't receive a hug/cuddle/pat/smile/giggle/and making rounds on the patient takes approx. 3 minutes........Just the facts.
I don't know about that. There's two female docs here that seem to take forever when it's my patient.....and 30 seconds when the nurse is female. "Course, one of them is married to Gargantua and the other one LOOKS like Gargantua. Oh, well.
The wolf:o
You know you're a male nurse when...
- you are part of the "girls."
- the message board in the bathroom is "designed" for the girls when they are going to do their business, but it is towards your back when you are doing yours'. (then the NM hollers at you for not reading the bulletin board, but it is difficult when you are looking at the board while missing the target when peeing. Then the NM hollers at me for getting the bathroom contaminated with my urine. The gall!)
- you realize the female MDs/interns/med students are so hott but you can't say anything about it because the other female nurses will find a reason to call them skanks.
- you have to act as the big/little brother and tell one of the young female nurses to stay away from flirting with the doctor who is MARRIED.
- there are so many more to choose from, but you guys have already hit on so many.
...You wished you had a dollar for every time a little old lady said, "Are you studying to be a doctor?"
...At the beginning of Football season you suddenly grow very religious and need every Sunday off
...You go to change a patient and they look at you and say, "YOU are going to clean me up?"
...You have an 5 patient assignment but know every patient on the floor because you have helped moved every single one of them up in bed.
...Your phone is constantly ringing with people asking, "Equipment X broke, do you know how to fix it?"
...You've hit your head numerous times on the traction bars attached to the beds.
...You've wasted hours of time looking for Large gloves in patient's rooms
...You are afraid of being attacked leaving work by all the male patient's you've been "asked" to put foleys in.
...You've heard too many stories from patients that start with, "I had a MALE nurse when I had my..."
...You have mild PTSD from your postpartum rotation with flashbacks of your insructor and you standing in a bathroom with your nude patient, your instructor grabbing the pad from the patient and holding it up to you, saying, "This is MODERATE Rubra".
...You get excited whenever you are in the male nursing forum on allnurses.com and see that your feelings are shared and universal...

Ain't THAT the truth!
Not an RN-- yet, but I am a LVN.
How about this... . A group of female nurses are talking about girl problems and turn around to tell you, "Sorry, I know this is probably grossing you out". Funny thing is I hear it enough that it doesn't even phase me anymore.
Or this. You're a big guy, you can help us lift Mrs. So-and-So. My reply, I may be big (I'm 5'11, 230), but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm strong.
:-P

i was thinking the same thing,,and women seem to leave bits and pieces of toilet paper on the floor all the time, i have no idea what their problem is, some are big wads of balled up paper too, before i became a nurse i was a janitor throughout nursing school and have noticed the same thing for every bathroom.
