Pre-nursing students who complain about having to take A&P! I understand it's a lot of work and can be very challenging due to the large scope of information we have to know in a limited amount of time. But people that say things like "This stuff is so boring." or "This grosses me out." confuse me! If you don't have any interest in the human body or it grosses you out, why would you choose a profession like nursing? Maybe someone can enlighten me...

Vomit, mucus, c-diff infected stool are a few things that gross me out, but that doesn't interfere with my job as a nurse lol. I don't think you have to be in love with these things in order to be an effective nurse. You may have to deal with them on a regular basis as a floor nurse, but it doesn't mean things won't bother you.
Do you suppose that in order to be a hospice nurse, you would need to be excited about death or dying? Or are you there to provide comfort and support for the patient and their family?
I remember the first time I had to do a disimpaction...I almost hurled. Some things you can't turn on and off, but you do what's best for your patient because they need you.
I think nursing students often have an idealized notion of what nurses do, and most of the realities of the profession you get on the job.
If you hear someone saying things are gross or boring, it might just be their way of coping with the inevitable...unless they go into mds right away lol.
Thanks

I can understand why some may find it gross but boring?! I have never heard that. That is sad if you ask me. I find the human body far from boring. I agree serendipity.
Lol. I was not saying that people should be EXCITED for A&P, but if they can't tolerate taking the class, I don't understand why they would want to be a nurse. That's all I'm saying. I definitely understand getting grossed out by things and get bored on occasion, but really, it's all some people do. I had a friend that wanted to be an X-ray tech but didn't because she hated science. If you hate science, why would you want to be an X-ray tech? Lol. I'm not a fan of math, AT ALL, but I don't complain about having to learn it because I know I will need it as a nurse and it's not the main part of the curriculum, science is.
I think there are still a lot of people who want to be a nurse because of the money. If that is the case, I can understand why they might not be as interested as those of us who are passionate about our future as a nurse.

As far as saying it is boring (at least at the time), I must admit that I am guilty. Though the reason I said it, was not because I find the human body boring, but because I spent so much time reading a text book and studying, and then I arrived to class just to listen to the instructor read off of her power points. The subject was never boring, but the class, the instructor (in my case), made it difficult to want to learn it, or at least attend class.

i could see why some people would find a&p boring....i personally didn't find the cellular stuff all that interesting, nor what the tissue types were. i don't think someone has to be in love with the class to become a nurse. i think that they should be in love with a certain aspect of nursing, whatever that may be. everyone is different.
i definitely agree. you absolutely have to love a certain aspect of nursing. i understand that some people rely on just their passion for nursing to get them through the pre-reqs, not their passion for science. i think that is a good thing. but for me, if i really hated science i don't think i would consider nursing. everyone is different though, as you said.

I don't think you have to be enthralled with every course in any given major to want to go into that field. I found some chapters of a&p interesting and others not interesting (okay boring! :) ). Overall I'm the kind of person who's very interested in how the body works and healing processes, etc., but that doesn't mean I enjoyed every reading assignment in a&p. Not every text book is well written and not every teacher is engaging. A lot of people who find a&p boring may simply be saying that they don't like the textbook or the the way the teacher is presenting the material - or both. Sometimes as you go through the course these people who are finding it overall boring may find a chapter that engages them - other times not.

I am LOVING this class. A lot of info---sure, but for me, I have such a desire to learn more that it just keeps getting better and better. I'm kind of a science nerd. I love to have my mind challenged, too.
I haven't heard any students complain about it being boring, but then again, I haven't been on AN lately. It's GOOD stuff!!!!

While nursing is a primarily science degree, I am not a fan of science. In high school, I slept through BIO, almost failed CHEM, and stopped just short of dancing around the counselor's office when I was told I wouldn't have to take another science course to graduate (I went to 3 different high schools, and the first 2 I had to take 3 science courses). The only part of science I've ever really liked was genetics, and they hardly focus on that in school. Nursing being such a science-focused major is a prime reason I didn't go into it as soon as I got out of high school. I'm going in to nursing though because I like helping people and making a difference. The potential paycheck is also something I could definitely use. I already try to help people as much as I can...why not get paid a decent wage at the same time?
I forgot all about dissecting.....I'm definitely not looking forward to that.
Same here. I am a closet science geek and am soaking this stuff up like a sponge. I can't believe how I just let everything go down the drain in high school. I think that is what drives me to do so well. I am proving to myself that I am smarter than I thought I was at the time, back then.
I am also going into nursing because I love to help people but I also love school so I kind of want to be a doctor.
