I just got accepted to the bachelor of nursing program at Humber college (collaborative program with the University of New Brunswick) and to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at York University (collaborative with Seneca college). I'm so excited I can't even see straight. I have also applied to the BSCN at Ryerson University but haven't heard anything from them yet. I'm just trying to figure out which is the best place to go. Does anyone have any input? I knoiw the Humber-UNB program gives you a bachelor of nursing degree as opposed to a Bachelor of science in nursing so I was leaning towards York or Ryerson because everything i've heard seems to be that the BSCN is the better one to get???
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Michelle

Stuck On Nursing

I'm in! I just found out I'm starting Nursing at Humber this September!
The BScN and the BN designations are considered the same. It just depends on the school you go to what designation you get. With a BScN if you wanted to do something else in science, medicine for example, you would not have the same courses done as if you did a BSc.program.
I chose Humber because all 4 years are done there. Big bonus! The classes are smaller than going to York for example. At york some classes might have 300 people in a lecture and no chance of one on one help as with Humber. Also, I heard that with York they concentrate more on theory end of things where as Humber focuses on clinical more. I think that will make a better nurse.
Let me know what you decide and we can talk further.

First of all , congrats!!
I just found one incorrect info, "300 in a lecture." If it is a nursing course, even in a big university such as York or others, all classes are small. Jusf FYI :) All nursing courses/ programs have a small number of students, at least in Toronto area schools.

I'm a preceptor Nurse for York University. I work Homecare in Brampton. The York Nursing program is comprised of small classes. This I know form talking to the clinical co-ordinator. Over the years I have had Humber, Seneca/York & York Students. I have found the York program is long on theory little on skills, the mantra being "They will pick up skills as they go along"The results? They run rings around those of us who have not had the new theory but they are very hesitant on the skills taking much longer to integrate into Nursing practice. Also many BScn students are amazed that they don't start off at the "top" because of their degree. I feel the combined Seneca/York program was the best. Two years of theory primarily clinical before finishing off the last 2 years at York.
Hi:
I stand corrected. I actually was thinking more about electives that one might take during nursing. I realize that even colleges might have larger numbers of students in "general" type courses, I assumed that they would still be much smaller than University courses of the same type.
I hope this corrects my posting better, and please correct me if I'm still wrong.
Thanks,
Giggles

I graduated from Georgian/York U. last June. The classes were not very large at all in University, at most there would be 30 students per class. You only need 3 electives outside of nursing at York, I only took one course that had maybe a 100 students in the class. Yes it was large and not very personal but you dealt with it as is the whole University experiece. The 3 nursing electives you have to take they of course would maybe have 15-20 students depending on how many were interested in the course. It really was not that bad for class sizes.
As for the theory part, I totally agree there. We spent a lot of time on theory and not alot on skills. Although in the first two years of school we spent more time on skills and more time in clinical as it was 2 days instead of one day at York. I do know that York had intergrated a skills component that tried to bring everything we had learned in the last two years together, which was helpful. They also had a lab component that was mandatory in the first semester of thrid year and this helped further our skills with different scenarios. But it would have been nice to see it in our fourth year too. Alot of the graduates felt that they did not have enough skills to enter the nursing field by graduation. But some how we all seemed to manage, you are not going to learn everything you need to know in nursing school. I found I have learned a lot more when I finally started working. Prime example would be that I did not have the opportunity at all to do a catheter in all of my four years of school. I finally got to do that in my job.
I am not really sure I would recommed York Univeristy, I have heard that Humber spends alot of time on skills and clinical. I have also heard that Ryerson has a good program. I am sure that all the schools have there flaws with there programs somewhere along the way. You should go the school that you are most comfortable with.
