6-Year Plan!?!

Published

I am a SAHM to 3 boys. I started this job nearly 12 years ago with my high-school sweetheart of 17 years. I always knew my first job would be a "Homemaker" and then I would be able to pursue my "Dream Job" of being a nurse. I have always wanted to go into the nursing field. I remember telling my Kindergarten teacher I wanted to be a nurse just like my mom. Having kids has only intensified this urge of being a RN. See my oldest son was born with a Diaphragmatic hernia and spent 18days in the NICU. Then 2 years later my twins were born at 28-wks spending 6 and 8 weeks in the NICU as well as coming home on APNEA and O2 for the first 6-months of their lives.I want to start taking my prereq classes and get them out of the way. I am looking towards my BSN degree within the next 6-years, that is when my husband will get to retire from the state and I will hopefully get to start my RN career.I am wondering what classes I can take now that will carry over for when I start the 4-year RN-BSN program. Also am I being to ambitious right now? Should I step back and wait another year or two before I start these classes? Thank you for your time

You will need to find which BSN program you want to do. Then, contact them and ask what prereqs you need and what will transfer.

Thank you Jennie.K

It took me about 6-7 to finish my BSN. I was a single mom at the time so I took my prerequisites over the course of 4 years then full-time clinicals/diadactic for 18 months. Hard but awesome. Now at 44 I just finished my MSN. You can do it!!

THANK you so much! That is my plan to do all my prerequisites over the next 4-years and then full time clinicals. Now I just need to research programs that will allow this to happen. CONGRATS on your MSN that is a huge accomplishment! You should be so proud of yourself. I would love to pick your brain more about how you started this prereq plan. I will PM you my email if you don't mind?

I can't figure out how to PM on here. On my mobile now, maybe I can figure it out tomorrow on my PC. I'd be happy to answer any questions. :)

No worries, I can't figure it out either and I am on my PC lol

Some schools require that all pre reqs were taken within the past five years of your expected start date. I started taking the pre reqs two years ago and began the application process for this fall last November.

Thank you for that. These are things I need to know when looking into colleges.

a016202 and nrobinson7: Did you do your pre reqs classes all online or through a CC?

I think the most important thing is to look at the websites of all the schools you'd like to apply to and read them thoroughly. They should have all the classes you need to take listed our, as well as how old they can be when you apply. In order to avoid having to retake sciences, I would just start simply like you would with any degree. English, History, Government, etc. Then, as time gets closer I'd start taking sciences like Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology one at a time. If your school requires an entrance exam, you'll want to check timeframes that you can take it and plan to study.

For now, though, I would just focus on the easy stuff like gen ed You never know when a school's policies will change, and being so many years away from applying, you'll probably have to do some things differently than they're done now.

I don't think you're being overly ambitious! You're excited and that's awesome. Plus, life has a way of throwing curve balls at you and changing plans, so I don't think you'll regret getting what you can out of the way when the stars are actually aligned!

I had 4 years of gen ed studies done and only needed one pre-req for my bsn. I took most of those classes online. If you are looking to do an rn-bsn program look at the pre-reqs for both programs and see how many overlap. A lot of mine did. If you keep your gpa up through your pre-reqs it may give you wiggle room for nursing gpa. My nursing gpa was a 2.7 but combined science gpa was a 3.1 and I was able to get into a competitive rn-bsn program. Total it took me 8 yrs but I was also undecided for 4 of those

Thank you so much! I guess I am just gun shy. I have read alot of pros and cons about online school and then find out that a "pro" school's credits didn't transfer over so their pre req classes didn't count. I thought I might go in and talk to the UNR counselor and see what they suggest. However I am worried they will suggest stuff not needed or that will not transfer over and I will do that class and spend that money for no reason. UGGGH glad I found this forum . . . Thank you all so much!
