Hola Everyone!
I have been debating it for a few years now and am about ready to make the switch. I have been doing Graphic Design since I graduated in 1999 and have had enough. I am tired of all the deadlines and sitting in front of the computer ALL day long. Plus, I have a deep feeling in my gut that I want to do something more meaningful. I know there will be lot of people that think I am crazy but what's new.
I am planning on meeting with an advisor next week. Then I am going to sign up for 1 or 2 classes at the community college, which are required before applying for the Nursing program at our school. Plus it's waaay cheaper. =) I have to take the 2 anatomy and physiology classes, chemistry and 1 or 2 others. English, Psychology and a few other core classes I will have covered from my BFA degree.
I am also thinking of studying Radiology Technician. Does anybody else have experience with this field?
Does anyone have experience taking online courses? I was planning on taking the 1st A&P class and Chemistry this way. The 2nd A&P class I have to take on campus.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. This is completely uncharted waters for me.
Anywayzzz, look forward to meeting and talking with everyone. I am sure I will have a slew of questions for everyone here in the near future.
I have taken the majority of my classes online, including sciences (labs were on campus though), and it has worked well for me. I have about 60 credit hours, and I've made straight As. If you have never taken an online class though, I would suggest starting with something simple like psychology or English rather than science. This way, you can get a feel for how the online learning style will work out for you. Science classes are more difficult in general, so I wouldn't recommend making A&P or something your first online class.
Good luck!
Yeah, that's probably sound advise...not taking a harder Science class like Chemistry or A&P online first off. I talk to an Advisor on Monday so maybe there's an easier class that I still have to take, I'm not sure.
Thanks all to all of those who have been there done that, for the great advise!
The great thing is that I am so dang eager and motivated to get started that I can't stand it. I figure that can only be a good thing.
Congrats Mr. Tom! and we too are in the same boat. I am sick of sitting in front of the computer working on websites and signs, and business cards, etc. Before that I was an executive assistant for many years and got into web design because I couldn't stand working with baby executives any more and wanted to be there for my kids.
I flirted with nursing about 19 years ago before I met my husband ( we met at our local comm college) where I was taking pre-reqs for nursing, but we had a family and the rest is history.
I do not have my bachelors degree yet so I don't know how long this road will be for me. I am going to take classes on a campus because I need to get out of the house and I think classmate interaction/study groups will be good for me. I wish you so much luck and now I have a "partner" my age to share experiences with I hope, keeep in touch!
Yes! We will definitely have to keep in touch.
Have you taken any of your classes yet? I will find out next week what all I have to take 1st. Thanks for swinging by!

I came from a similar ed/career background and I'm about your age. I'm in nursing school now (visiting this site on a break from studying for finals). I took one prereq at a time at night while I worked full-time. And I've had to revisit info from every single prereq in nursing school: it only gets harder. Much, much harder. I think it's worth the extra money to build this core knowledge. (And to make friends with the A+ students in those classes, as they will be your classmates in nursing school.)
