Yay I start volunteering next month!

Published

I am finally all signed up to start volunteering at a local hospital ( a huge hospital, btw) next month.

I will be a floor assistant, hanging out at the nurses station and helping patients with small tasks like working their tv, filling out patient satisfcation surveys, if its ok for them to have water get them water, etc.)

Also once a week I will be delivering tea room to room in the maternity ward!

I am sooo excited. The volunteer coordinator said I will definetly be able to tell if I would like being a nurse based on these volunteer experiences I will have. I LOVE the hospital. I always have liked hospitals (I know I am a bit weird because of this) and going there for the volunteer interview really affirmed it, I just had such a good, intrigued feeling walking thru the corridors.

you don't sound weird at all for liking hospitals! i always have, too.

congratulations on the volunteering! i started volunteering this fall at our local children's hospital in the pscu (step-down from icu) and i absolutely love it. it has only confirmed my desire to be an rn! mostly, i help the child life staff, not the rns, though i've had a few opportunities to shadow the rns along the way. it's amazing: during one volunteer shift, i went from organizing a birthday party for a 7 yr old about to be dc'd to (about one hour later) holding the hands of a parent who made the difficult decision to take their 5 yr old daughter off life support. the next week, i watched a toddler child go from crying in pain during treatment to squealing in glee as another volunteer and i got to play "santa" and pass out toys to the kids on the floor. never have i left the hospital not feeling like i had really made a difference in a child's or a parent's life - it's wonderful, and i look forward to the same feeling as an rn.

best wishes to you! i hope you enjoy your volunteering experience as much as i do... :)

Congrats!

I wish I could volunteer! Right now, I couldn't even mention it to my hubby. I'm sure he'd think If I could handle volunteering and studying, I could handle getting a job and studying! :lol2:

I've always loved hospitals too, even when I had to be the patient. :( There has always been that since of belonging, as well as a deep concern for the patients.....seeing someone in their room, wishing I could help them get better.
