Hi everyone! Wanted to start this conversation for those who are getting ready to apply once the application opens on June 1st 2021.
I am hoping we can all share information, ask questions, and support each other throughout the exciting journey ahead!
I hope we can all listen to the wise words of @FutureNP2025 and engage only in respectful discourse moving forward ☺️ I’m truly beyond excited about becoming an APRN and cannot wait to begin at YSN this Fall (manifesting my future LOL). It’s easy to get activated by someone’s words online because we cannot hear their tone, nor do we know them/their intentions. That’s okay! That doesn’t mean we won’t all get along wonderfully IRL. ❤️ Best of luck to anyone who has an interview tomorrow!

I wanted to remind everyone that the internet is forever and we need to keep that in mind when we post things.
This is a public forum that the admissions committee, instructors, preceptors, and most importantly, FUTURE CLASSMATES all have access to, along with everyone else.
Let’s try to remember the type of person that we want to be, and the type of NP we want to become…..does arguing with someone on a forum designed to help guide each other through the admissions process align with the core values of YSN? Does it align with your personal beliefs? Does it help better anyone? Would you be comfortable with the admissions committee, or your future patients reading these discussions?
Over analyzing and combing through statements made by potential classmates does not resolve any issue, nor does it help to educate them on how/if/why what they’ve said is offensive or non-inclusive.
It is very easy for everyone to sit here and say “as a future nurse, you should know this”….yet this mindset provides absolutely no resolution, rather it feeds into this blaming and shaming cycle. As a future nurse, and APRN, we should be working together to provide the best outcome for our patients....not arguing an online forum ? It is essential to remember that while we may disagree with each other, and our values may not align, our values will not always align with our patients either...and instead of arguing, we need to work on finding a professional way to provide education and resolve.
Lets all reset and get back to the purpose of this forum……..
Again, Best of luck everyone.
I think there were well intentions to have a discussion on how allegations of racism were being addressed at Yale. There was nothing wrong with that except how some took the conversation instead another route. I agree that people on here need to be more respectful and mature.

I love this community and the positivity being show here?? bringing it back to my original question, I really would like to know what it is like to be a Black person at Yale. Any knowledge at all would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone heard anything about microaggressions or have heard stories of anyone being treated unfairly in classes because of the color of their skin? I’m getting increasingly worried

I’m Mexican and this is something that is in the back of my mind about Yale, but I do know they value diversity and social justice. Nevertheless even if any individual or institution values such things, things can still go wrong. I did want to ask a question about this during my interview (there was an article written by the Yale student paper on these concerns) but I was way too scared. I’m from the west coast so I also have no clue what the culture is like on the east coast or in the New England area when it comes to this ?

If I get a 3 bed, I'd probably want to use the 3rd room as a study room / office, but who knows how things will end up.
?
I’ve also been looking into living situation ? glad I’m not the only one. It’s my way of staying positive and trying to stress less! If I manage to get in, I’ll probably reach out! ?

Also a west coaster and Mexican American. Hopefully we both get in and can be friends, as I am sure we will both miss home. I went to undergrad on the east coast (suburbs of Philly, Pennsylvania) and I didn’t notice any racial tensions in my area. If anything, people were pushing each other to show me the “best” Mexican food when I was feeling home sick. But my undergrad was a pretty diverse university so not sure if that had a lot to do with it.

I wish I could message you privately but I haven’t had enough activity on my account yet. I want to emphasize that this anxiety you have about attending YSN is completely understandable. Racism affects your physical and mental health and you have to prioritize your safety. I hope you can see that you will, at the very minimum, have people by your side at YSN who will support you in the face of subtle and overt anti-Blackness. This, of course, doesn’t negate the trauma of experiencing racism at the hands of your academic institution. With that being said, here is a link to a document written by Black YSN students demanding changes to address anti-Blackness within the nursing school. Keep in mind that this was written in November 2020, but seeing if any of these changes have been implemented since then could help provide a picture of the current climate at YSN.

Best of luck to you! I am also a west coaster (AZ, undergrad at UOregon).
I can't initiate PMs yet but certainly reach out if we both are accepted ?

It’s comforting to know we’re in a similar boat! I’m also from the west coast and I’ve never been to the east coast so it’s all new to me.
