Yale GEPN 2018

Published

Hey everyone! Now that applications have been out for a while, has anyone started the process of applying for the Yale GEPN program? I hope that your applications are going well if you have! Also, if there are any current GEPN students that happen across this thread, if you have time, feel free to share your experiences in the program and any tips you may have :) Thanks!

Hello! Congratulations everyone. I am deciding right now between Yale's GEPN and UCSF's MEPN for CNM/WHNP- I would appreciate any information that you can offer about the pros/cons of each program.

thank you!

Both are great programs, congrats!! I suppose like anything, it depends on a few personal preference things--I think you will likely get a great education at either one.

I would consider the overall cost of living + the program (especially vs. where you live now and what the financial aid options seem to be).

Also, just doing a gut check with how you felt going through each application/interview process?

My friends who have attended/worked at UCSF note that it is highly bureaucratic, but that it works for people who really like those systems. I've heard mixed things about the commitment to diversity etc. on both sides, but both seem to be actively working on improving this.

If you are at all interested in a Ph.D. program after, it might be worth asking about that path forward at each school.

Probably worth thinking about car requirements for each program as well for clinical rotations.

YALE:

+ One of the earliest midwifery programs and faculty practices in the United States

+ Ivy league recognition (not important to everyone--but certainly can't hurt)

+ Close to many other east coast cities (BOS, NY, etc.)--all known for great academics as well as medical research and care

+ I've heard this program and the school of nursing has a really good working relationship with the Med school and PA programs

- Not sure where you live/if you are looking for a change, but the location (CT) is something to consider, more of an academic/college town than a city and they have a real winter!

UCSF:

+ SF is a great city, and California, in general, has a lot of state-wide support for women's health initiatives.

+ Connections with some of the larger hospitals in the area (SFGH)

+ Small classes, with hands-on learning

+/- Professors often do a lot of research as well--which is really cool to have professors who are highly engaged in the field, but not sure how that balances with mentorship/experience.

- In a city, but with a really big tech culture as opposed to a big academic community & SF cost of living plus tuition is SO EXPENSIVE.

Hi, all! I am new to this thread--was accepted into the Pediatric Primary Care track!

I was hoping to get in touch with some current students in this specialty. I'm currently at Oklahoma State University, so this will be a GIANT move for me. I don't have a family that will be making this move with me, but I do have a dog. Just wondering what the typical schedule is like! Any insight into the 'day-in-the-life' of a GEPN student would be extremely appreciated!

P.S. Looking forward to meeting all of you in the fall!

Hi @hebates, congratulations on being admitted to Yale! Most of the conversations have been moved to the FB Yale GEPN 2018 group page. You can find or get some of your questions answered there.

Do a search in FB (if you use FB) and request to join and we will get you added.

Anyone on the midwifery waitlist hear back yet?

The date to let Yale know whether you are accepting their offer of admittance was last Friday, March 16th. I know it is hard, but you might need to wait a few more days since today is the first day back after they have received all the final acceptances last Friday. I also think there is another snowstorm coming through New England so that might cause delays as well.

Good luck!

Has anyone on the waitlist heard anything?

Has anyone on the waitlist heard anything?

I still haven't heard anything. im on the waitlist for pmhnp.

Still nothing?

Update: I spoke with Sandy about midwifery admissions, and she said all of the accepted applicants accepted their offer, so at this time there has been no movement on the waitlist.

Hi there,

I'm an aspiring psych np. I'm curious to know if any accepted Yale students had not completed any prerequisites? or only completed minimal prerequisites?

I'm also curious about accepted student's financial aid/scholarship/work study experiences.

thank you for your help.

You would be in the minority if you do not complete at least some basic pre-requisites. While the Yale GEPN program doesn't "require" pre-reqs, the majority of the applicants have at least the basic trinity completed prior to applying (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology). Many of us also had additional pre-reqs that we have taken because we applied to other programs that required them. If you only want to complete minimal pre-reqs know that you will be compared to other applicants that have completed more then the minimum.

I was also asked during my interview if I had taken any pre-reqs and was asked to list which ones which my interviewer did write down in my interview notes. Again, while the program doesn't require pre-reqs, having completed them shows that you are committed to learning, willing to put some work into your academics prior to admission, and that you are a self starter even if they aren't required.

That being said, Yale does take a holistic approach to its applicant selection process so that is in your favor but almost all nursing programs are competitive nowadays so not having any pre-reqs completed compared to the others in your applicant pool will put you at a disadvantage when viewed through this one aspect of the selection criteria.
