WSSU - Accelerated BSN Curriculum

Published

Can any current Winston Salem State University student tell me about the ABSN curriculum. How many classes and clinicals are in each semester. What are the clinical sites?

I am not in the current group, but graduated the accelerated program this past February. The accelerated program does not have semesters or abide the traditional school schedule at all- no spring, summer or fall breaks and no federal holidays (though they did make sure we had some days for Thanksgiving and Christmas). You will be in 2-4 classes at any given time, but only one class that requires clinicals at a time (so maybe Pharmacology, Gerontology and Adult Medicine I at the same time, but only Adult I would have a clinical). Classes are generally during the week, though you may have an odd weekend day class. Med-Surg clinicals are done at Baptist, except for OB, which is at Forsyth. You may also have clinicals at Oak Summit nursing home. Community nursing clinicals are done at a variety of locations in the community and parts of Psych nursing clinicals are done in the community (AA, NA, mental health meetings). The classes that have clinicals are Intro III, Adult I, Pediatrics, Maternity, Psych., Community and Adult II.

You can be accepted into the program even if you are in the middle of finishing up a pre req class correct?

I'm an alumni of the traditional RN BSN program at WSSU. Do you have a degree already KmSharp? I believe if you have a degree already and are in the process of being finished with your pre reqs by the start of the program you will still be considered. I'm not 100% positive but I know when we were accepted into the Upper division of nursing it was based on passing the classes the previous semester. One could be accepted into the program based on their current GPA and classes however, if they didn't pass or someone else had a better GPA at the end of the semester they could be replaced.

Thanks for the reply Gem0607....yea I already have a bachelors degree. I am begining my pre reqs but won't be able to finish until december 2012 so I was wondering if I should even apply in august 2012....

I would set up a meeting with the coordinator for the program to see what your chances are. I was recently accepted into the class that was just admitted and will start in Jan 2012. From what I was told about decision making, the people that have complete the pre-req by application time are looked upon better than those that still had pre-reqs in progress, although they would be done by the time classes started. Everyone that I have spoken too has completed their pre-reqs already, but I have heard of cases of some exceptional students being admitted even though pre-reqs were not done.
