Would love to start working in L&D or mother/baby

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I have been a RN now for 3 years. When I got out of nursing school no L&D or mother/baby jobs were available to new grads because they said that med/surg experience was preferred for 2 year. Now that I have the experience behind me all of the jobs are requesting OB experience. How am I supposed to work in the area of nursing that I like if they will not let me get the experience?? Are there any suggestions that you can give me to help with this difficult job search??:crying2:

That's depressing to have experience but then be told it's not the right kind of experience. In my area new grads can be hired into mother/baby and sometimes in L&D (a little less common though). I thought especially for L&D that med/surg experience would be enough to start with.

Specializes in Cardiac.

I would apply anyway. Managers can be really picky right now in this economy, but with your 3 years of med/surg I think you would be a great asset. Just make it know how much you want it!Good Luck!

Specializes in LTC/Skilled Care/Rehab.

I agree that you should just apply. You never know what will happen. Good luck!

Specializes in NA, Stepdown, L&D, Trauma ICU, ER.

I would start by getting involved in all things related to L&D. When I was in nursing school, I already knew that's all I wanted to do. I figured I could up my chances by being more educated than the standard new grad, so I went through DONAs doula training course :sofahider It gave me a lot of ideas on how to support moms who don't get pain medicine, either by choice or necessity (stop & drop delivery) I landed a spot in L&D straight out of school, so I think it was a good selling point. Good luck! It really is the best job in the world!
