Would love feedback from a nurse

Published

Hi everyone,

I am hoping all of you nurses will give me some words of wisdom. I am at a stage in my life where I need to go back to school. I am 34 and have two children who are 7 and 4. My husband works long hours which leaves me to feel like a single mother at times. I am questioning my capability of getting through nursing school and wonder if I should just pursue medical assisting or go for my LPN. I have all of my prerequisites complete but can't decide which road to take. This has been a constant battle in my mind. I have family members who advise me NOT to become a nurse due to the mental and physical stress and friends who have recently become RN's tell me straight up to look into something else. If my heart isn't 100% sure about this career, should I look elsewhere??? Thank you in advance!

Examine the job market in your area. See what job you're more likely to get and which pays the salary you'd like.

I guess I would answer your questions with a question. Why do you think you would like nursing above something else in the medical field? Not sure what kinds of nursing jobs your friends have but some have more stress and some have less. For example, my friend works as an ER nurse (which is crazy stressful of course) but also picks up shifts at the local urgent care center (which he says has absolutely no stress and he loves). Just some food for thought.

I would read the posts on this website. Nursing jobs are hard to come by -why go back to school now and not be sure of a job afterwards. Something to think about.

MandaRN94, all the new grads in my area are having an easy time finding employment so that doesn't appear to be an issue at the moment.

Have you considered doing a job shadow? Maybe you could spend a few hours (even a day) with a medical assistant, and then a day with a nurse. It helps to see the day to day duties up close. I shadowed several RNs who worked in different specialties when I was a pre-nursing student. It was very different to see one RN working home health, and another in dialysis...another who was a med/surg nurse. Good luck in your search!
